So i've been playing the game for a couple days now having just recently bought it. I'm enjoying the experience so far, but i've realized I might have made a bit of a blunder.

You see, my long term goal is to start exploring when I get a hold of the higher end scanners and spread my name across the stars. Unfortunately, I realized a bit late that it may be difficult to do that when I didn't think to use my real name. (I am CMDR Magnificent Beard in game).

So I know the only way to change my name is to clear my save and start over. I haven't done anything super impressive since I started, so I might be willing to do that. What I want to know is what the character limit is when you're making the name of your character. I don't want to clear my save only to discover that there isn't enough room, since I kinda want to put Magnificent Beard into it like a nickname.

TLDR: ​What is the character limit and what characters can't be used when making your name?

Well I got too impatient to wait for an answer and found out myself. Character limit is 20.

You do realise that in order to conform with the latest Space Regulations that a beard must be at least 2 feet in length in order to qualify as magnificent? I would hate for you to fall foul of Regulation 4976543-AA9 (Sub paragraph vii). You could well end up with both your ship and beard impounded.

Mine is eighteen characters, spread over three names - so add the two spaces and it's twenty.

Alas, I cleared my save and am now known truly as CMDR John C. Schmidt. There wasn't enough space for Magnificent Beard anymore.
Too bad there isn't more detail to setting up your character, so you could also establish alias/nicknames and such too. That'd be cool. But I know I'd regret it latter if it wasn't my name being spread across the stars!

While I admit that my beard has yet to reach the true pinnacle of magnificence required to warrant the designation as shown, I assure you I fully intend to come into compliance with said regulations on the honor of my family and the Galactic Association of Beards.
