That mission scared me away from combat for a long time (I think I failed in destroying that ship 9 times out of 10), which is a shame because combat is really fun. I hope new players realize that that is not a true reflection of in game combat...Gimballed weapons really help.
Fightstick or HOTAS setups makes the game 10 times easier.
I wouldn't say "easier", but certainly more convenient and more immersive.
And you will always find some combat pilot who can play with nothing but a trackpad on a netbook and absolutely smush you.
I did quite well with the mouse for a long time, just turn up the resolution on your mouse to it's highest setting and fly.Fixed weapons is almost unworkable with mouse imo.
If you are talking about gimbal, might be, but still marginal.
The problem with mouse ... is deskspace required for turning - that's what makes it very hard to play Elite with mouse.

No, tutorials are for kids that need to be taught, I prefer to learn by doing. OJT

The problem with mouse and this game is 2 issues, 1 is recentering, 2 is deskspace required for turning - that's what makes it very hard to play Elite with mouse. It's got nothing to do with skill, but the ergonomic factor.
I think the problem with that tutorial is not because of gimbal vs fix weapon, but the fact that the tutorial doesn't have a warning of "GET A DECENT FLIGHTSTICK BEFORE YOU TRY COMBAT!!" lol
Combat with mouse and fixed weapon mount is an absolute mess.

I found the tutorial combat mission harder to do with a hotas then mouse and keyboard because simply fixed weapons with a stick are harder to aim, while I could easily keep on target with the mouse.

On the contrary, I think it's great. I spent some time doing it while messing with my HOTAS bindings, and when I was done I noticed that I'd gotten much better at fighting in my vulture. There's zero risk or cost involved, and once you're good at that you're good at fighting with fixed thermals in any ship. I just wish there was a similar mission with fixed multicannons so I could get a lot of practice with fixed kinetics.

Really? I find it quite precise.
The main problem is long pitches, but I bound those to the separate buttons and hold them down, just using the mouse for precision/careful movement.
