If they start charging for them, that's when I stop plying. I'm sick of constantly paying out for stuff when you play online. I never wanted to play online at all and bought the game purely on the promise of a single player offline mode. With that, I could have as many characters as I wanted.
Well, I'm certainly with you part of the way- I backed this for a proper "DRM-free" offline Elite, with proper saves. I don't need to tell you how low I think that bait and switch was, I suspect.
I am, however, used to playing online games, and actual MMOs, and have seen how horrible the "new economics" of them are. Paying a tenner for some extra slots would be mild, in this era of the misleadingly-named "free to play" game. They use all sorts of psychological misdirection tricks and deliberately misleading predatory pricing (
"weaponised behavioural economics" and
"coercive monetization") to bleed gamers dry without them noticing (I don't exaggerate, you can find plenty of books and courses to explain how you can become an F2P monster too). I've known people who have spent
thousands without really noticing on current "free to play" games. FD are actually not even selling enough of the entirely optional and non-game-breaking things that people
want right now.. they're generally incredibly benign in the current context of online games development and publishing.
No, I don't expect that to make you feel better, as you sound like you don't play modern online games. You signed up for a proper sprawling offline Elite, which is what you were promised. So did I, the thought of not being nickle and dimed to play online with a bunch of people who make you want to gnaw your own legs off was like a breath of fresh air. However, what we have is (sadly) an online game of some form, where the developer doesn't just sell you a nice game and leaves you to it, but keeps hold of you by the danglies. Me, I'm used to that- and if it continues to be a fun Elite game, I will regretfully tolerate it. Right now, the game is annoyingly splendid- with a lot of potential, so I'd find bailing difficult. Obviously, you're more than welcome to grumpily beg to differ- some of us would have a lot of sympathy with your POV, ultimately.
