Could we have more than one character?

I don't believe that would be a concern in Elite, as that kind of issue is only really applicable to games where you have to make a choice that affects the route you take through the game. You don't have to make that kind of decision in Elite... Nothing you do today will stop you doing something else tomorrow.
You mean like becoming hostile to a faction? I can't just log in tomorrow and suddenly I am no longer hostile to them. There ARE things you could do differently.

The best thing about this thread is that it's all moot. We are getting extra slots at some point, when FD get around to it. We don't know if we'll get any free, and at what point we start hitting microtransactions, but it's coming. People who are unhappy with that are free to not use them. The rest of the players will be freed from this slightly odd restriction, and able to do their thangs also. I'm not naive enough to think that this will make both camps happy- they're both gonna complain about something- it's the nature of the beast. However, it's coming, so for your own sanity and comfort, best to get used to it :)

No, to become un-hostile you'll need to regain reputation with that faction. You can do things differently, yes, but nothing you do today will prevent you from doing something else in future (ok, maybe not tomorrow in your specific example - it depends how long it takes to repair your reputation).

Nothing is character defining and permanent. Not like choosing a wizard instead of a warrior.

We do not need unlimited characters. We need one or two more. By all means, allow up to 10 characters but you have to start paying for them after 3.

And just no to local save games. Just no.

That sounds quite a lot like good guess at the sort of thing that a reasonable developer might do.

If they start charging for them, that's when I stop plying. I'm sick of constantly paying out for stuff when you play online. I never wanted to play online at all and bought the game purely on the promise of a single player offline mode. With that, I could have as many characters as I wanted.

Well, I'm certainly with you part of the way- I backed this for a proper "DRM-free" offline Elite, with proper saves. I don't need to tell you how low I think that bait and switch was, I suspect.

I am, however, used to playing online games, and actual MMOs, and have seen how horrible the "new economics" of them are. Paying a tenner for some extra slots would be mild, in this era of the misleadingly-named "free to play" game. They use all sorts of psychological misdirection tricks and deliberately misleading predatory pricing ("weaponised behavioural economics" and "coercive monetization") to bleed gamers dry without them noticing (I don't exaggerate, you can find plenty of books and courses to explain how you can become an F2P monster too). I've known people who have spent thousands without really noticing on current "free to play" games. FD are actually not even selling enough of the entirely optional and non-game-breaking things that people want right now.. they're generally incredibly benign in the current context of online games development and publishing.

No, I don't expect that to make you feel better, as you sound like you don't play modern online games. You signed up for a proper sprawling offline Elite, which is what you were promised. So did I, the thought of not being nickle and dimed to play online with a bunch of people who make you want to gnaw your own legs off was like a breath of fresh air. However, what we have is (sadly) an online game of some form, where the developer doesn't just sell you a nice game and leaves you to it, but keeps hold of you by the danglies. Me, I'm used to that- and if it continues to be a fun Elite game, I will regretfully tolerate it. Right now, the game is annoyingly splendid- with a lot of potential, so I'd find bailing difficult. Obviously, you're more than welcome to grumpily beg to differ- some of us would have a lot of sympathy with your POV, ultimately.

Yeh we don't have offline mode. Well established. And that means online storage. So that's that.

But we have one slot. Anything is an improvement. So if you got three slots you would keep playing. But if we got three slots with the option to buy more, you'd quit.

OK then :) Just because it's you, three slots maximum.

Data storage costs money. 500k accounts with three slots triples the storage requirements. Perhaps paint sales covers that and the development of the game. Perhaps not. I'm not FD's financial analyst. So I'll stop suggesting that they might possibly need to charge for additional storage because I don't know. And light knows I wouldn't want to upset the offline crowd and make them quit the game.

We aren't getting your infinite slots. We probably won't get 10. But the need for more is still clearly there.

So I'll reiterate.. We don't need more than 3. I'd be very happy if we got one more. And if we only got one more instead of 3 + optional paid extras, you'd not quit. All good then.

10 and I'd be happy(ish, considering I wanted an offline game so I would have had unlimited slots). Any less as far as I'm concerned would be an insult.

We have one right now. So you'd be unhappy if they gave us one more?

Why bother at all? Best leave it as it is to avoid insulting everyone.

But I don't think everyone needs more than 10 to not be insulted by an improvement to the game. I appreciate you want to be heard and I would be delighted if we had 10 slots (I'd never come close to using them all, but if everyone is happy then I'm happy). But your argument preface was "speak for yourself". And I just don't think the majority of people who want more slots would be insulted with anything less than 10. So it's easy for me to say "speak for yourself" in return. And I get the feeling you really are only speaking for yourself.

I know why you say it. Offline mode has clearly stung you sorely. I'd personally like 6 slots. I thought we would get 2 or 3 at launch but I would have preferred 6. But I'm not only speaking for myself. So I appreciate that, from what I've read, most would be happy just to have a couple more. And this is because most people are reasonable. And if you're given something you didn't have before, most wouldn't take it as an insult.

What surprises me is you must be severely insulted right now, if 9 slots would insult you. I don't tend to play the games of developers when they have insulted me. And I don't hang about their forums, either. I get rid. This is why I haven't bought an EA game for a very, very, very long time.

So I think I should leave it with "speak for yourself". I want 6 slots. I'd be delighted if we had 2. Because that would be enough for me to do what I want to do. But I appreciate many want more (like me). So reasonably speaking, 3 would be fine. And 10 would be dandy. I just have the common sense not to be insulted when I'm given something, no matter how entitled I think I am.

"Stung" is a very polite way of putting it. I don't have a good ISP so I get constant stutter, lag and you name it, I've been kicked off the server untold times because the server hasn't had a response from my PC. This is why I tend to avoid online games like the plague. Unfortunately, I don't have the cash to start paying out for BT to install a new line so I can change providers. I now have a game that I can only play late at night due to bottlenecks caused by my ISP spreading the bandwidth to thinly which results in severe lag at peak times. I'm talking about the kind of lag that means you can press the key to drop out of supercruise at a station then go and make a coffee and come back before your ship has actually dropped out. The fact that I work day shifts 6am-6pm means that I get very little chance to actually play late at night. Therefore, I can only really play it on my few days off.

If I didn't have to go online, I could spend a couple of hours on the game in the evening after work before going to bed, a chance to wind down for the evening and vent a bit of the frustration that's built up at work during the day. Security guards have to be polite and professional, even when someone is screaming at you and threatening you, even though all you really want to do is smack them down hard. For that, I apologise if I came across a bit harsh earlier with my "speak for yourself" comment, I tend to leave my professionalism at work.
However, we were not given the offline game and therefore, having only a few slots for alternate characters would be another blow to those of us who bought the game on the basis of that promise. I am also waiting to see what 1.3 brings because if it's 99% content for open players and practically nothing for solo players, that's where my time in this game will end anyway. 1.2 brought wings so open players could group up and even NPC's formed groups but solo players never got NPC wingmen to form groups with. Therefore, solo players got practically nothing from 1.2 at all apart from a couple of ships. If 1.3 turns out the same way, there's not much point in me playing at all because with the lag I get, playing in open is a no go anyway.

I feel your pain.

On the bright side, 1.3 seems to be focused on a lot of stuff that'll benefit everyone, not just mp. 1.2 was very important (the game's mp was severely lacking). But I have a feeling 1.3 will be much more important.
