Community goal: Sisyphus

The punishment for playing Elite: Dangerous is seems is taking part community goals.

Make it to the 40% tier, only to be knocked back to 70% later on. Toil some more to regain 40%, only to again be set back to 70%. Do it a third time... a fourth, and be knocked back again and again.

An eternal struggle of similar to the punishment given to Sisyphus by Zeus. I think I'd prefer to have my liver eaten daily by an eagle, at least I just need to lie there chained to a rock. Not be taking actively taking part in what can only be characterized as an evil social experiment.

I keep making the same mistake over and over. Am I insane to expect engaging content in a procedural generated universe? The answer is yes, the mistake has been mine for expecting more.

If you enjoy doing whatever activity is the focus of the community goal, do it. If you don't, don't. Stuff the money, if you get it you get it.

Nice story Bro. How about when you get what it is, realize it's not what you expected and are disappointed. Sure you do something else instead unless you are an idiot. Does that invalidate or in any way mitigate the disappointment?

On the Evil social comment experiment possibly, but that much only.

At least someone gets it.
was that the definition for insanity, or Plato?
EDIT: Interesting, that saying is often given as Einstein, ancient Chinese and some others, not Plato, but the only hard evidence was its first use in a 1984 novel by an author named Brown and a Narcotics Anonymous publication.

The rewards are based on percentages. Given the number of people participating it's not at all surprising that a given person's reward tier may fluctuate quite a bit. Especially with the numbers some folks are managing to turn in. With this particular type of CG, the CG rewards should be viewed as more of a bonus than anything. The real money involved is in the bounties you're collecting.

Plato was the defacto nose that cut off his own face. Claiming that professing ignorance of a topic was the path to wisdom got him put in his appropriate place, 6 feet under. Stupidity on that scale deserves capital punishment, but that's the issue I'm bangin' on about.

That may be true, but I was led to believe that once you qualified for a tier, that's it you got there. Instead I've been knocked back from top 40% where I was quite happy to 70% 4 times. So 4 times the reward has been dangled under my nose only to be swiftly whipped away.

It's Sisyphian toil, a game mechanic that creates an eternal feedback loop of disappointment, a never ending struggle of getting nowhere.

I'm just saying that i't my fault for expecting more. If you are happy with it, I posit that you are insane.

I'm not a huge fan of it, but I understand the way it is set up. Perhaps they should have some CGs with the current model (competitive) and others that are cooperative (everyone gets a cut based off the percentage they contributed rather than the percentile of contributors they're in). The overall pot for the cooperative event would have to be much larger than the competitive event to be worth doing.

"Led to believe" by who/what?

Community goals are races. The tier you're currently on represents your position in the race right now. Obviously if you then stop doing the activity you'll drop down the field.

If you were leading at the half way point in a marathon and then decided to take a rest would you also be surprised and disappointed when you found you were no longer leading?

Because that was what I read here on the forum, stated when Community Goals were first explained. That you get to keep the level you attain.

If it's an attractive Community Goal for any reason, you'll be competing with lots of other CMDRs for the Top 70%/40%/15% etc.
Basically you have to permanently work into it, otherwise your ranking amongst the other contributors will automatically keep falling all the time whenever you take a break.

Awesome math lesson, cheers. I doubt you are intentionally insulting my intelligence so I'll +1 you for effort.
