Just my opinion on PvP in Elite: Dangerous

Hi Folks, hi Forntier,

I've been a big fan of Elite since I first played it in the 80s. I was very excited about this new star on one of the greatest games there ever were. The graphics are awesome, the universe endless. But how am I supposed to enjoy all this, when I am killed litterally every time I fly out there as a simple trader? I somehow managed to make enough cash to get my first ship upgrade and got myself an Adder. On the sidewinder I somehow managed to to escape a couple of interceptions or was lucky enough to had no cargo or mission with costly fail-penalty when I was shot out of the sky and I thought "well, that's part of the game"... But it took like forever or so it felt to make some cash. Then I finally found some lucrative trade lane, but still needed lots of runs to get enough cash for a bigger ship. It wasn't exactly what I call fun, but I grinded on.

Then I finally got enough creds to get an adder for larger cargoholds for better trading. But as soon as I try to fly anywhere, there seems to be some jerk just waiting to shoot me out of the sky. That might be simply bad luck and still be part of the game, but it leaves me completly frustrated with no perspective on the game. Even in the so called "solo" play, I'm shot out of the sky whenever I play. One might say "Hey you just suck, go play Hello Kitty!" It might be true, that I'm not good at combat with a basic Adder, but that's not the point. My point is, that Elite:Dangerous is not fun at all, when you simply stand no chance whatsoever.

So what can be done about that? I would suggest to give players like me the chance to play the game without those so called "pirates" and "freelancer" or whatever they call themselves. I don't want to shoot other players and don't want to be shot at by others. So flame and troll me as you like, that's my opinion and I think I'm not alone on that. I payed for this game as everyone else and I think players like me should be allowed to play this game as they hoped they would be able to, too.

Nadomir

Its that same brutal learning curve that will make you love and respect Elite even more once you know what you're doing. Frustration is normal in games with steep learning curves. Find a friend also now that wings is out its easier to team up and help others. Keep your chin up commander; I promise it gets easier.

Sincerely, Richard Feynman

If you are trading in an Adder and having trouble with the NPCs attacking you (in Solo mode it has to be NPCs unless something has gone wrong - Players have CMDR before their name) you have a couple of options I think.

  1. Play through the combat tutorials a few times. But even then it's going to be hard facing them down in an Adder for now.
  2. Practice evading the interdiction.
  3. Learn the "Brave Sir Robin" manoeuvre.

  • Submit to an interdiction straight away (don't try and fight it, reduce throttle to zero). This has two advantages. The first is that interdiction damages hull, submitting doesn't (or greatly reduces it, not 100% sure there). The second is that it reduces FSD cool down.
  • Put 4 pips in ENG, 2 in SYS.
  • Boost as quickly and as often as you can until your FSD cools down.
  • Jump away to Supercruise.

Be patient, don't lose faith. Practice.

Well it seems the thread title is a little misleading, so the advice to join mobius may not be that helpful. Are you sure it was another player the first time, because in solo there is no pvp.

But doesn't matter if pvp or pve:
If you think you're not good enough in combat you should run. It is rather easy for traders to escape interdictions simply by submitting -> boost -> fsd.
Have your exit strategy ready before you need it and you should be able to flee every encounter you don't think you can handle.

Good luck out therer CMDR

When you paid for this game you accepted an EULA and the game as it stood, from the basic mechanics to the risk of combat in this "space combat and trading game" (as a player of the previous Elite games you will be fully aware that in the original Elite combat was what marked your progression and that encounters with pirates etc were not optional or escapable).

Would you expect to purchase a game with a specific focus, mechanics and gameplay then complain that you can't play the game in a way that was never intended? Do you think THAT opinion would be valid just because you forked out your cash on it? Nope. So what makes you think your opinion is valid in this case? What makes you think that the developers should alter their vision of space travel/combat/trade in the 34th Century just because you "don't want to play that way".

You bought the game and had a certain expectation of how you'd be able to play. You made an assumption and it was wrong. Now you come to the forum and complain because you made a bad decision and had completely inaccurate expectations of the game, and go on to imply that the game should be changed because of some view you had in your head?

And people claim that gamers don't have a mindset of entitlement. SMH.

OP - you can avoid interdictions altogether if you keep a close eye on the scanner - throttle back and drop out of super cruise before anything gets a tether on you.

That's how I traded in open - sometimes with no shields - till I built up sufficient funds to get a tougher ship with more options.

Good luck commander!

ETA - and if you happen to see me around in game say hi - I'll ride shotgun if you like.

I think you're being unnecessarily negative to the OP. Modern gamer entitlement really winds me up too but I don't think this is it. The OP is basically saying the same as FD.

Edit: Nadomir, also see this thread. Lots of good advice there too. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=138376

I stopped playing the original because I could not get ahead in the game and was constantly attacked and killed (and that was a standalone game). Now that we have the choice of joining a PvE group or going Solo, to me it is the perfect situation. I have progressed well in Solo, (trading and exploring), have joined Mobius (but have been exploring since before I joined so have not experienced it yet) and am on way back to move on to the combat elements. I may go in to Open play when I am confident that I am not just going to be cannon fodder.

It is very simple there are 100000+ systems to choose from and about 500000 its fairly easy to avoid other players if you want but still have a very chance encounter usually with another player who want the quiet life away from everyone else.

In the last week or so Ive seen one other commander, use the good jump range on that adder and get 150LY away find a High tech set it as home and explore around you for a good trade route

Like MrDoe says above, until you have your fighting chops, prepare to flee whether human or NPC. In more detail:

When being intersected, don't play the circles game, throttle back to 'submit'

As soon as in normal space, set 4 pips to throttle, 2 pips to system

Point away from threat, maximum throttle and hit boost. Keep boosting as soon as available

Junk around a little as you escape, ideally using side registers too

Engage frameshift as soon as cool down is complete.

Once in supercruise, target a system and go to hyperspace ( to avoid being chased)

Don't feel disheartened, with 400,000 players, you can't be the worst, and you'll work it out soon! :)

This will open up the game for you.

In Solo Mode, you are not being shot by any other player. You are simply coming across hostiles in the galaxy. NPCs... Non-Player Characters.

PvP is Player versus Player, but you won't experience any of that.

Players appear on the radar as hollow squares (weapons in) or hollow triangles (weapons out). Their names always start with "CMDR".

NPCs players appear on the radar as solid squares (weapons in) or solid triangles (weapons out). Their names never start with "CMDR".

I payed for this game as everyone else and I think players like me should be allowed to play this game as they hoped they would be able to, too.

You are playing the game you paid for. It's just shooting you out of the sky. :)

In the System Map, take note of the "Security" level. HIGH is safest. LOW is worst. Note: You may need to move the cursor off the main star to reveal the general system info - try left+right mouse buttons, and drag.

The game do have a bit of a learning-curve. One of the first lessons, whether or not you get pulled over by NPCs or players, is that in your little Sidewinder with glorified laser-pointers as weapons, you better get used to running.

Now, I've played only in open, and for sure, I've been killed by players a few times. Mostly due to seeking trouble, but a couple of times when just minding my own business.

Open do come with its own little dangers. You never know what motivates people you meet somewhere out there. So better speak with a soft voice and carry a big stick. For me though, that is what makes it exciting.

Travel a bit out from the starter area - and stay well clear of the Lave cluster - and you will find that most, nearly all, encounters you have with fellow players are quite polite and pleasant. People looking to cause some mischief, do so for the most part where they know there will be easy victims, and plenty of them. So at first opportunity, once you got the FSD to do so, transport yourself some 40-50LY away from where you started. Find a nice quiet little corner of civilized space, and do your business.

Better yet, if you need a really big stick, join a group that can protect you in your endevours, and even avenge you should you fall victim to some homicidal maniac.

Oh come on! This game is the easiest space sim I have ever played, bar none. I've played the game a lot and haven't lost a ship yet, either to a player or an NPC, and I'm far from being a sharp-reflexed youngster with uber twitch skills.

So anyone who is having more trouble than you is what? Wrong? Or just different?

All hail Danube the indestructable ;) (lighthearted)

One insurance claim since gamma, but it can be unforgiving. Some people have a bad run. Let's face it, we have all been there in some game or other, struggling to get to grips with new controls and concepts.
