Settled on a ship.

Having worked my way up from Sidewinder, through Hauler, Adder, Cobra and Asp (which was a fun journey with all the ships unique characteristic) I have believe I have found my perfect ship (for the moment).

After A-rating my Asp, I then built up enough money to start branching out into decent spec Clipper/Dropship or basic Python/FDL territory but whatever else I try, I keep coming back to the Asp.

Personally, with the setup I have (A-rated everything, advanced scanner with detailed scanner, A3 fuel scoop, 80t cargo, class 2 pulse with either class 1 cannon or multicannon setup) I can go exploring, pop into a RES for some light bounty collecting, do rares/long trade routes or chase around after community goals).

It's not a world beater in any way but it just does everything well. I can go anywhere, dock anywhere, travel long distances with relative ease with the jump range and fuel tank size. The only thing I have to change the setup for is mining, which isn't too much of a effort.

I wanted to find out from other commanders if they have found their perfect ship that they keep coming back to (either as their only ship or as part of their fleet) or a ship that they feel would be perfect for them in future updates (I for one am very interested to see the details of the Imperial Courier when it is added).

I agree the Asp is a very good ship and I keep going back to mine, apart from bounty hunting and kill missions that I like the Vulture for.

Good choice. The asp was my favorite ship for a long time.
For me my go to ships are the Anaconda, Clipper, Vulture, FDL, Asp.
The conda is a lot like the asp in a lot of ways as it can do anything.
The clipper is more than anything a pleasure to fly and pretty effective as an all rounder.
The FDL is just fun to fly and hear, otherwise I don't like it lol it's not bad it's just not my jam.
The vulture is clinical, a tool for taking out targets in a war zone, also has a good noise.
The asp is my tour bus, if I want to go somewhere really far away like going to alliance space to cash in my bounties I take that.
The imperial courier, diamond back, and corvette all have my eye and will likely be assimilated upon their release.

Well, i haven't got an all round ship, but...

The Anaconda serves all my trading needs, cargo isn't as big as a T9, but it handles a lot better and faster and more importantly, the jump range is really better.

The Asp is my exploring vessel of choice. I guess i could use the Anaconda there again and benefit from a much sexier cockpit view and a better jump range, but the asp is a lot more agile, and when you spend weeks in deep space, scanning a huge amount of planets and stars, you'll definitely want a ship that's agile ^.^ (and before anyone argues here, yes, even in SC the difference in agility is very noticeable)

As for combat, there i really haven't settled, i like the Python almost as much as the Vulture or FDL, they all have traits that are interesting for fighting.

So, i can't say i have settled on just one ship, i really appreciate the diversity made available(and i can't wait for the imperial courier!) but the Asp and the Anaconda will always have a special place in my heart ;)

I love my Cobra AND my Asp. I'll never sell either of them. I bought multi-pack paint jobs for both of them and a chrome paintjob for the Cobra.
I may get a Python sometime soon after my current exploration trip and would love to get an Anaconda later.

My choice of ship is severely constrained in that a) I do PvP and b) I treat it seriously (unlike almost everyone else who does PvP, and treats it as a pure pew-pew "oh, lost my ship, respawn!", I try very hard not to lose my ship, ever, no suicide runs); so I need a ship that can always outfight, outrun or escape the opposition. Which narrows the choice to 'Lance, Cobra, Anaconda (out of my budget to equip one), Clipper (which I can't buy yet because I don't have the requisite rank) or (perhaps) the Orca. Upshot is, you'll almost always see me in a 'Lance or Cobra at the moment.

(I don't mind losing ships to the AI - faceplanted a security Anaconda yesterday, for instance - but I'm not giving some CMDR goon the satisfaction. Or my bounty.) :)

Great replies, I heartily agree.

For me personally the smaller ships up to Cobra were transition ships, although I have returned to a Sidewinder, Eagle or Viper if I had a large ship and had to cash in some bounties that were only available in outpost systems I was traveling through and got interdicted. It was a great little road trip in the smaller ships to pick up those bounties.

For me, the Cobra is a great ship but cargo was too small.
The Dropship was a laugh but it needs passenger missions to release its full potential.
I LOVED the Clipper but not being able to land at outposts was annoying (I like to be free to go anywhere). As with the Dropship it may be worth another go when passenger missions are introduced.
The Python was amazing but I was treading water trying to fund the upgrades to the higher class modules (to be fair, I should have waited for more assets before purchasing it).
Never had enough cash for the Conda but all good things in time.

For me Elite is a game I can just pop into every now and then and fly around doing some missions, trading etc.

I don't understand players who say they are not going to play again as they find it boring. This is a massive open game where you make you own choices, not have a dev write a script for you to follow and that is one of the best things about it.

If you want to be dumped straight into a battle or have someone write you story for you play Freespace or some other combat space sim.

I love the thread about the explorers who have been to Sagittarius A super black hole. Might start heading that way and see what trouble I can get into en route.

THAT'S Elite. Have a wander, misbehave on a galactic scale.

Mine is the Asp too. I keep coming back to Asp ownership. I think I'm on my fourth. I keep A-rating one, then going for a bigger ship and getting my 30 million from the Asp sale, then I make more cash and by another Asp LOL. Stupid, I know. I love it.

At one point my Asp was my trading ship, but then I went through Type 7 and Python. The Python is a lovely ship to fly (after a Type 7), but I only had it set up as a trader with 284 cargo capacity. I didn't fit it out with top components for 2 reasons. Firstly I wasn't sure I'd be keeping it. I used it as a stepping stone in terms of cargo carrying until I got my Type 9. Secondly to upgrade the components was hugely expensive, money I just didn't have on my way to the Type 9. But then I got to the Type 9 and traded in every ship I owned to get it. I then bought a Cobra to act as my little run about between Type 9 hauling. But once I had a nice credit buffer I got another Asp. Fully A rated. I use it for exploration, missions and even a little combat. I love the way it can hold its own in a fight, even though it's not a combat specialist. It really can take on most roles and perform them well.

So at the moment I have a Type 9, an Asp, a Cobra and my most recent acquisition, a Vulture. But for pure pleasure of flying and just general messing around doing a bit of everything I personally don't think you can beat the Asp. It was even better in beta when it had another 64t cargo space ! Those were the days.

So once I had enough cash I sold my Python and bought a Type 9.

I love the fact that we can have multiple ships in this game, and I love all the ships that I currently have. :)

I have a Cobra that I use when I do a rare trading run, an Asp for exploration (or missions that require more cargo space), a Vulture for combat, and I still keep a Viper that I also use for combat. The reason for the two combat ships for me is that the Vulture is just so powerful in combat that I occasionally like to go and bounty hunt in the Viper to see whether it's me or the ship that can win a fight. :)

Don't have the credits or actually the desire to have the bigger ships at this point.

If I had to sell all of my ships except one it would be a difficult choice between the Cobra and the Asp. In the end I'd probably choose to keep the Asp. The increased jump range, cargo capacity, and firepower is just too useful.

A tooled-up Asp is a good ship. I have a Clipper and a Vulture as my other main ships, but I probably spend most time in the Asp.

I love reading these threads. It's because the ships have SO much character that people become attached. The Asp is such a good all rounder that I completely understand your choice.

I love my Cobra and keep my Sidey for sentimental reasons. Grew quite fond of the T6 and the Vulture and currently trying to bond with my new Asp. She hasn't clicked as quickly as the Cobra but I think she just needs a few more upgrades.

I have almost got my asp up to scratch, just need shields, advanced discovery scanner, sensors and A grade power plant and I will have my trade ship that can defend itself quite well. It also has a great cockpit in the Oculus Rift. I will then be looking to get a vulture for bounty hunting but that's a little way off yet.

As so many others, Asp is my favourite. I haven't repaired the paint in ages, was 24% last time I looked. Will hopefully be 0 when I get back from Borg space.

I have a vulture for res, and a clipper for trading, which has been parked since I bought the vulture.

My asp is the only ship that I have given a name to.
