Charity week - I want to donate some gold to newbies, how best to do it?

It's time to spread some of my good fortune. I want to donate a couple of million credits to newbies in sidewinders by dropping them some gold. The trouble is, I don't play in "open" mode, only in the gentleperson's private club, "Mobius". I doubt if many newbies would be playing in Mobius' group.

So, is my only option to drop into griefer mode, er sorry "open" mode, and hang around LHS 3447 with the danger of being inconvenienced by the rabble?

Perhaps we could organise a charity community goal? I drop the gold, and a wing provides cover against the griefers/cheaters/exploiters like those laughing stock boys, The Schmode?

Wait until 1.3 drop em some to get a drone module, teach them how to use it.
its what I'm planning to do in my conda.
I'm down to wing up with you to do that once the time comes.

I'm testing the waters in LHS 3447 to see if any newbies are there and are up for it. I'll go there in solo mode, and then drop into open mode, in an unarmed ship to donate gold. Anyone attacks me, I'm logging out. Is that "combat logging"? Nope, it's "anti-moron logging".

Nice offer.

My first experiment was a disaster:

  1. Jumped into my Hauler that I use for a taxi (unarmed and kitted for distance and fuel scooping, no cargo racks)
  2. Found a place that sold gold but only 2T cargo racks. OK, I'll try with 2T of gold.
  3. Flew to LHS 3447 but crashed into the star because I was reading this forum. Never mind, drop a heat sink.
  4. Flew to Trevithik Dock which is about 110,000 Ls away. OK, I can do the Guardian cryptic crossword at the same time.
  5. Found some Sidewinder "harmless" players there and texted them with the offer of free gold. No response.
  6. Made the offer again. No response. Repeated a few times.
  7. Accidentally jettisoned one ton of gold inside the dock when I was messing with the control panel.
  8. Jettisoned the other ton of gold outside the dock but got a 150CR fine for doing it in the no-fire zone.

I need to give this more thought. :D

You seem to be a "good deeds newby" :)

The problem is that the real newbies are so concerned with pirates that they will assume that you are just trying to trick them and will try to escape and they will no doubt not realise how to use the comms. :D

Trevithik, that's where I started :D Is it one of many?

I have done this once for someone on the newcomers sub forum.

I travelled 100ly to his location, met him outside a port, flew just outside the no fire zone. Dropped gold in batches of 10t (he was already in a cobra I think) 30t in all.

It was interesting and required trust. I think I was in a python :)

Happy to do this again if anyone needs help.

Good luck.

I was in an unarmed and unshielded Hauler, to engender trust. It may be that newbies don't get the comms thing.

This needs to be organised better. It would make a great Community Goal, eh FD? ;-)

It could be done as such on here in the newly section. Problem is that it would also bring in the griefers who would go along with it right up until they destroy the newby OR they would drop the gold without it being marked as abandoned and the newby would get fined etc etc

No its combat logging.

Calling everyone who would attack an unarmed ship full of gold bullies, thieves, cowards, or scoundrels might be fine, but I wouldn't say they are the moron :)

Good points. Just the sort of low thing "The Schmode" cheaters would do. Needs to be organised.

No, as I said it's "anti-moron logging". This is about being kind and charitable. Do you understand those concepts?

Where do you draw the line on combat logging. If you are doing charity work its ok, what about just trading and minding your own business?
Should peaceful traders be able to combat log if they are interdicted?
What about every player getting pirated in open?

Logging off is logging off no matter how noble your actions may be.

The easiest way to drop items for new players and keep yourself safe, and be nonthreatening to them is to do it outside the station within the no fire zone.

I like the idea of giving out a bit of help.

Charity is fine, in the right quantities. I think my 30t was a little too much.

Free system security - unasked for, is another way.

No need to turn an idea that is worth discussing into some combat logging crap fest. Have enough of those already. Don't we?

People who play in "open" mode do so out of choice, and know the risks. I don't play in "open" mode, I play in Mobius' private group. I'm only doing this in "open" mode to get to the newbies who I can't get to in Solo mode or who won't be in Mobius.

If I was armed and looking for trouble, fair enough. But an unarmed, unshielded Hauler donating to charity, not so much. If I'm not attacked, no problem. If I am attacked by morons who open fire without dialogue or negotation, I'm out. Those are my rules. Don't like it? Tough shirt.

If it's too much frikkin' bother for the uncharitable types here I'll just move on.

Lord Lucan Onion Head: The system won't let me rep you til I "spread more around". So consider your self virtually repp'ed.

Some people don't understand the difference between knowledge and intelligence.

IE: "A knowledgeable person knows the rules. An intelligent person knows the exceptions,,,,"

Thanks. I gave you a lozenge of rep. :)

From what I've seen combat logging is considered an exploit by the devs.

In fact there are only 2 exploits that I remember them having mentioned, selling parts from the founders world in other systems for a profit (which has now been fixed and many players were "punished") and combat logging.

They haven't said the same about destroying allied players at combat zones or ramming ships and destroying them inside stations while players are trying to land, they certainly haven't said attacking a weaker ship is an exploit, no matter how unfair it is.

Extra telemetry is being tracked to give them a better idea when this happens, and perhaps point to a solution, I'd expect if you combat log the other player will report you, its a pretty hot topic right now.

@OP if you can afford to drop gold for new players I wouldn't worry about the cost of insurance for your hauler. If you are actually genuinely worried about being interdicted by another player in solo, just do your good deeds in a cobra. It can boost away from every ship, just submit to the interdiction (not considered an exploit), boost and jump out.
