Movies that are close to Elite: Dangerous

Another vote for Sunshine here. The first time I jumped to a new system and the star almost hit me in the face I thought of that movie.

Also Stargate Universe, a really excellent series on exploring deep space.

The menu sounds in Elite Dangerous may as well have been directly copied from Alien: Isolation (more like Alien:Frustration) so I like to watch Alien in the background while I play sometimes.

Imagine the horror of being trapped on a ship like a Type 9 or Anaconda while a Xeno slowly kills your entire crew..

Valerian & Laureline. It's a space opera French comic that has an extremely similar vibe to ED except it has Aliens. It shows a massive scope of the galaxy with various races and civilizations. They have a 2-sits ship that travels through space and time and across galaxy. A lot of Empire and Fed type of government, politics, conflict, war, mercenary work, etc... There is an animation tv series Time Jam: Valerian & Laureline adaption from the comic.

43 posts and no-one has mentioned Star Wars!?! C'mon guys - Han Solo and the Mil Falcon are obviously DB's original inspiration (but it's best to ignore the next 5 films in the franchise).

Wing Commander (as mentioned), Space Odyssey (as mentioned), Interstellar and Europa Report are the only ones that spring to mind.

It doesn't necessarily relate to the space aspect of ED, but I feel like Blade Runner is a close approximation of how I would imagine Federation society in Elite. Everything is run by big corporations, corruption, and the general public doesn't realize what is going on. I can only hope once planetery landings come along that the cities look half as good.

Cowboy Beebop.

Firefly.

Alien (at least the Space Trucker part of it)

And... maybe this:
