Sex, Gender, and (Imperial) Titles

You know how it goes, players are always more special than everyone in all of the recorded background history combined. The day they follow up on that one, you will have a point. And all those faction-hoppers will be perma-killed. Coincidentally that will also be the day I eat my hat, and choke to death! So it will be both glorious, and a little sad. For me that is. :D

Oh, absolutely. I just haven't been involved in a good ol' argument on here, and that's...unusual, for me and a forum. Figured I'd throw my hat in the ring just to see how it goes... :D

Of course, there's the alternate explanation - a thousand years hence, feminism has achieved its goal in all human cultures and in absolute terms (wanting what men notionally have), so there's no need for distinct titles and the female-specific honorifics have been binned.

I thought most of those titles aren't even used in today's society. How many empires and kingdoms still exist in the modern age?

You're talking about a faction that trades in slaves. They aren't exactly a go-to source for progressive thinking on ethics and morality.

But I imagine they'll put in ranks like Dame, Countess, Lady. The only problem I see with it is it's already not entirely clear which Imperial ranks are higher than others (the high ones), putting in a whole new set is going to confuse matters further.

I hate to disagree with people, but now you're just narrow-minded. We will just laugh when the Cylons take over the Federation and then try to get into our not-so-networked environment. ;)

As for the topic at hand, for me it is actually about the traditional way of putting out the stuff. When it first must be done.

There's a difference between Imperial Slaves and your normal run-of-the-mill slaves. ;)

What would you rather... To be a slave for a year and come out of it debt free. Or to be in debt for thirty years and during that time all your work goes into paying said debt? The Imperial system does have some merit. :p The Empire is simply honest about the slavery, rather than trying to cover it up...

This is an important issue. Completely agree with OP.

If we want female gamers to feel at home, the game can't be "Male" in every aspect. Ranks should be a relatively simple fix.

As for pilot looks, I suspect that will be handled, when we get the "walk about" expansion, which I guess might be anytime from 1-5 years.

I want to be a boy named Sue.

What you do at the weekends is your own business.... ;)

But seriously I agree with the OP. How hard could it be to code the female equivalents of the ranks and switch them out based on the gender choice from the menu system?

Not a big bug, a game-breaker, or anything like that, but on the other hand, wouldn't it be nice if ED was a game that all players could feel comfortable in?

Bring on the girls, I say! :)

Yeah, and replace commander with commanderess while we're at it.

Protip: equality is not about being special, it's about being equal. Ranks have no gender for that matter. Again, look at current ranks in armies and navies.

Well, if that is the end goal - there are much more important things to fix before we get to something as superficial as titles.

Players using slang terms for female parts as insults for one, players referring to "weakness" (perceived or actual) by calling someone a "girl" and other such things.
How about when players openly talk about women in rude, derogatory manners? And other such behaviour.

Yes, I think for "female" gamers (I also hate that term, we are all "gamers" - no need to put male/female there) there are way more important issues than a title that serves no other purpose than if you can buy a Clipper yet or not.
The first thing we need to do, is learn to respect other gamers regardless of who they are.

Commander is a gender neutral term. It's also a rank. The op and the title refer to titles. Not ranks. And not the pilot prefix of commander.

Would you be happy if it said Baroness or Lady?

I'd think it was pretty odd if my male pilot was a Lady in title and deed.

This is pretty much not a lot to do with equality, actually. It's just not correct. Low priority, yes. But not correct all the same.

Titles ARE ranks.

Titles ARE ranks.

Yes. But not military rank. And, unlike military ranks, they have masculine and feminine forms in the English language. Mr and Mrs are titles, too. The correct term for a man is Mr. Would it be correct to call him Mrs?

Baroness is the female term. Calling a baroness Baron would be as wrong as calling them Mr.

The suggestion that it's changed in the future is not based on fact and is based on a total guess. So until FD tell us, or their lore confirms this as true, we can only go off of what we know now.

Baroness is, in the English language, the female form. Just like miss or Mrs. Using Baron is not correct.

Feel free to check a dictionary.

Someone in the FD front office is going to read this thread and regret putting the gender choice in the pilot profile,,,,,,,,

Hm I would think that in the time Elite plays out we've gotten over gender naming confusion and moved beyond it, how, gender neutral titles instead? but then people would complain that the rank didn't sound as cool and it since it is a game it should do so? So yeah don't know how to solve that one.

However it shouldn't really be too tricky at least for the rank code to make an if statement check pilot gender.
