Power Play: speculation
People have been linking this to the hockey term and that it could be represented in a way within the game: one team is at an advantage as they have more players on the ice due to the other teams penalty etc. However, I don't think that's the case and obviously the clue is in the name.
We know we're getting at least two new ships: The Diamondback and Imperial Courier.
Mining is going to be more worthwhile, and we're getting drones that carry out certain tasks. And there's the mission overhaul.
Now, they've told us that what's so far been revealed to be apart of Power Play has only scratched the surface.
Well, that tells me that we should be expecting a fair amount of content from Power Play.
Personally, I think we're going to also get the Federal Corvette. And that the Empire and Federation are going to truly go to war, with the Alliance seizing the opportunity for itself.
Or perhaps both the Empire and Federation are going to be embroiled in civil wars with the Alliance still seizing the opportunity.
In both situations, all out war.
Maybe we'll see Federation and Empire capital ships battling and not just one on one, squads of them.
I think you'll have to choose one faction and that will be it, no more being friendly and high ranks in each faction. Combine this with the mission overhaul among other things and we could have ourselves an interesting situation that may open the door for an alien invasion in a later update.
But I'm probably wrong.
What's everyone else think?
EDIT: I think that I've changed my mind from what I originally wrote above.
After hearing what others think and being shown details about what the developers have said in the distant past and more recently, Power Play looks to be changing the core of the game in a way that allows more interaction with the galaxy.
Mission overhaulin: are factions going to be more in depth and we can affect them more and being friendly with, say the Federation won't bode well if you travel into Empire space etc.
There's also other additions, like to mining as I've already said.
It's safe to say that with a comment from the developers, in the last newsletter I believe, saying:
"you haven't seen anything yet"
Power Play is going to be something very interesting indeed.
PS: Planetary landings, walking around ships and stations and boarding have been confirmed to be part of a paid expansion or expansions.
Aliens? Who knows, but it's unlikely they'll be in Power Play. This is looking to be an update that perhaps finishes the foundations of the game and delivers some well appreciated additions/tweaks that need to come before anything on a larger scale.
