If you're going to be a pirate, be a pirate

Well said. Pirates should bring fear and destruction. Despite what others said about victims would just go back to solo, that loses entire purpose of drama and conflict between players in open play.

Yes. Fear and distruction but in a polite and professional manner thankyou.

If you want the real deal, the full immersion of the galaxy, and you want others to play in the spirit of the game, you'd never admit to preferring self destruction over giving a few tons of cargo to another player trying to enjoy their role. You'd live it as close to theme as you could.
That cuts both ways - hopefully you wouldn't be demanding goods under the threat of violence in reality either.

As for the general pirates-killing-people thing, and back to in-game, a pirate should always be prepared to resort to it. What a pirate should want is compliance with his demands. If the victim thinks death is certain they'll run or flee, if they think there's no chance they'll ignore you. If they think destruction is a certainty for non-compliance and they'll get away with just a bit of cargo loss if they comply (and death meant more in the game) then they'll mostly comply. You want the threat to be believed, and to be believed there has to be a chance of it being carried out. A pirate with a reputation won't have any need to fire on anyone.

You can be whatever you want.

The one who submitted and is in the process of frameshifting to another system by time the pirate has his demand script going?

Hehe. No, I've always said if a player interdicts me and I'm defenseless, I'd give them cargo.

Indeed. But I don't think self destruct is part of the immersion of the games theme.

I think I'd pull the pin on a live grenade and drop it at my feet before submitting to a mugging in real life.

Fortunately, I have more precise weapons than grenades.

No one is ever completely defenseless.

No, that's one reason for making deaths more inconvenient. Maybe just even self-inflicted ones. I may try to run or fight (even if I wouldn't in reality and my odds aren't great), I won't ever self destruct or combat log to a pirate.

Welcome to the game, commander.

Just a friendly pointer; the pirates were playing the role of pirate no less than you were playing the role of prey. No one facing certain death would flaunt in the face of their aggressor if they actually stood to lose their life. Thankfully for you, all you had on the line was an hour of your time. And the pirates who opted to not destroy your ship decided your bounty fine wasn't worth it. Or felt they didn't want to put new players off from the game too much..

You're using trade to progress and this is the fastest, easiest way to do it. The pirate's path is the hardest and slowest. And if everyone self destructed then no one would bother trying, limiting the depth and immersion of our galaxy to the point where you might as well play solo.

Enjoy the game how you like (it's a lot of fun). But if you're to call others out for not playing in the spirit of the game, please don't avoid that spirit yourself.

Very very well said.... +1 rep for that.

I don't get anything about what you are saying.

If cattle disagrees, it gets put down. Simple.

Nothing Elite does with Crime and Punishment will stop that from happening.

good thing is: i don't have to wait for anything FD does. i can do it by myself. ;)

To be fair, I've made it my personal policy to drop some cargo anyway when and if I do this, as a tip of a hat to a worthy pirate ;) Make it worth his while, and still feel like I got away ;)

(why no, I never considered that it might slow him down from scanning my wake and chasing after me! ;) )
