Newcomer / Intro Do you have a star base?

I know the question sounds a little bit strange as E : D is mega huge and you can't officially call a particular star system your "home" but I was just wondering if any of you have a "star home base" ? Does it even make sense to even have one? Reason I ask this is because I have often enjoyed playing trading games in the past and usually I do have my "home port" where I call home and my base. I was just wondering whether it would be possible to have a similiar concept in E : D ?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and inputs :)

I have a "home" port where I park my trading ship between exploring.

Its a good system I'm allied with, out on the edges but good population to make money

I have one, though I haven't seen it in a while - and I'm looking forward to docking at that rusty bucket I call my home station in 6-8 weeks.

As someone who's primary calling is exploration, a station you can call home at the edge of populated space is quite nice. It reduces the risk of interdiction when returning, the dominant faction loves you for all the data, and you're far away from the bad parts of the NPC crowd.

I moved there quite early in my game career - three days and an Adder. I consciously picked a high tech system, and got lucky in finding one with its stations close to the main star, RESs, and some trading opportunities. (Not great, but enough do make money without much hassle

So yeah, I'm all for calling a place home. The faction game is more fun if it matters in role-playing terms, you get to know the neighborhood (where can I buy what, where does my faction spread to), and if you live on the edge of civilization, bringing in rares has a sense of purpose beyond the money.

Not a strange question at all, I think. I'd welcome a game mechanic that would allow us to chose homeports, actually. (With certain perks and conditions attached.)

Thanks for the encouraging response haha! May I ask what's your home port called? I still haven't decided whether to be a trader, explorer or fighter. Most likely will end up doing abit of everything :)

I have a "home" too, although like DOL I haven't seen it in a while as I've been busy working other systems. It's a very large population industrial and refinery system with 5 RESes and multiple faction alignments that allows me to trade, bounty-hunt and even mine (if I wanted to but I don't right now). It's got a good quality shipyard and outfitters.

The only negative of the system is that the pirates faction hate me so much that they send out pretty nasty wings to take me down almost as soon as I hit the RESes there.

I do, but I'm currently 3000ly away on an exploration trip, and, when I return, I'll probably choose a new home. I picked it some time ago, and really it's not ideal for many reasons.

Same here. They usually arrive shortly before I take down one of their Anacondas. :)

@Centerpide: Tell you my home system? So someone can interdict me when I arrive with two months worth of exploration data? :) Gibson Gateway, Cuachini. Lovely place, great sunsets.

Not me.
I take the role of a tramp steamer's skipper.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,

To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;

And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,

And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

I store all my ships (currently only 1, but hey, you have to start somewhere) at Shinrarta Dehzra (a.k.a. Founder's World). So that would be the closest to a home system I have. I do spend most of my time flying my reasonably lucrative trade route, so I'm spending most of my time away from good old Jameson Memorial at the moment.

I'm of 'no fixed abode' at the moment but having just got back from exploring and so am on the edges of populated space and having sold my data to a Federation faction, I will look around here for somewhere to think off as home taking into account the type of things mentioned by DoubtOutLoud above. I do need to settle down a bit now that I am all grown up.

Yes, I have one too. It's my base of operations when exploring. I chose it with some care too. There is a pretty good trade route close by and also close by are enough systems to sell me any ships or equipment i need. Forgive me if I do not tell you name of the system because I want to protect my trade route. However, it is on the far side of the Empire and on the edge of human inhabitated space.

I have one too - Amarak - as with some others I've been hitting up the RESs for a while and am now hostile with the local mafia 'Silver Family' - makes it much more interesting with big dog fights and some pretty close calls - e.g. earlier had three wings open up on me, including an Anaconda, Python and Dropship.

There is a good selection of ships for sale and good outfitting; it's not too far to go to cash in Empire and Alliance bounties from my KWS.

The only embuggerence is the presence of bugged conflict zones - I keep checking them out but they are filled with faction-less ships cruising in slow loops. Good for screen shots and debugg camera action - but that's about it.

After much tramping around, Mackenzie Relay, in Cemiess. It's as close to the Imperial hub as you can get without going to Achenar, which is a pest of a system to get around in. Besides, our beloved princess lives there.

I also admit to a liking for Big Harry's Monkey Hangout in Jotunheim. Just because :)

Have a home port currently at founders world although spiritual home is Aulin. Usually pick a hi tech world so good for trading and ship upgrades. Also helps to find good local trade routes, bounty hunting spots etc. helps to get rep up with factions and sub factions too. These then give you access to better missions.

Yes. My home port is Vess Ring in the Cao Gong system. It is in the southern part of the Empire, a big station near the edge of the bubble - making it a nice place to star out on my exploratory trips rimward. There are also some nice trading routes to nearby outposts. I find there to be several advantages to being there.

In the beginning, when I wandered out of the starting systems in an Adder I went "down" until I came to that. For whatever reason, I liked it, and made it Home.

I originated in Aiabiku system and I have a A-graded Cobra there, but I havn't actually been there since the officially launch day on the 16/12-2014. So I not sure if you can call it a home starbase.... I tend to travel a lot around populated space so I have a few starbases spread all over like 10-12 systems with a cheap sidey to use as a beacon to me when I look in the galaxe map. To give me and overview of the populated area...

I found a home system within the Empire where the profit is consistiently high (12K/t/hr), a station with large docks, several RES within 1 hop, and multiple CZ usually within 1 or 2 hops. After venturing out to farther reaches for missions or unusual trading, I find an oddly comforting feeling when I hop back into my home system. Can't explain it other than to say that everything is familiar here. I know where everything is in the system, I know what is in the neighboring systems, and I know which NPC factions sends the pirates. Now that I'm in my Clipper, I rather enjoy when the pirates interdict me as I gladly mass lock and destroy them. Yes, there's nothing like home.

I not sure if I misunderstand this: (12K/t/hr)
I've never heard of anyone being able to make a profit of 12.000 per ton unless you are talking Rares but those don't come in large numbers I've only tried it once and it took me like 3-4 hours and I only managed to fill ca. 150-160 Ton in my 'conda, sure it made a nice profit but I also used 3-4 hours collecting it + 30 min to go to a far off station to sell it and I had to pay 3 or 4 fines for having illigit cargo when I didn't awoid the scans... (I know a anacond is not the optimal ship for rares run but I just wanted to try it out so I could check it off my "to do list"

OK, I understand your confusion. When someone asks you, "how much do they pay at your company?", you don't answer by saying $150 because they don't know if you mean $150/day, $150/hr, $150K/yr. So, a trade route's profitability is always measured per unit of time or the profitability is meaningless. I can do 4.5 runs/hr at 600K cr/run using 228t cargo hold. That's 4.5*600/228 cr/t/hr or 11.8K cr/t/hr. I rounded that up to 12K/t/hr because sometimes I do better.
