Fine fines and more fines! The fines discussion thread

I wouldn't say this was a balancing issue, but it is very bizarre..

That sounds utterly ridiculous, as you've said...

I classified it under the "balancing" term because that was the first time I was ever scanned by another player (and carrying questionable cargo), hence I assumed it's a intended mechanic. Didn't know I was so unlucky to fall victim to a bug as well.

I'll record the issue next time and create a ticket, if it happens.

It happened to me as well. A CMDR scanned me and I got a fine for some limpets. The fine is 50% of the value of your illicit cargo which is ridiculus.

[Q] dormant fines

I have a dormant fine. I'm far far away from the system it is in. So my questions are - If I get kws scanned, will the dormant fine show up? Will I be showing as wanted? Do I have to return to the system to pay it off? TIA.

it will only become active in case you get scanned by a system authority ship belonging to the faction that issued this fine.
and since it is still a fine you would not become wanted immediately, but only after the countdown ticks away; fine is then turned into a bounty which is visible to other players.

Blown up by security for 200 cred fine.

It has happened a few times now that while searching for bounties I'v accidentally incurred a minor violation for friendly fire. Where upon the security forces at once go into all out kill mode and blast me to bits.

I find it both extremely annoying and unrealistic that security forces kill people on sight for fines that are nothing more than pocket change.

I'v even been intercepted and killed by security forces while trying to get to a station to pay off the fine.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that :)

Sounds like you need to work on some things, OP.

Trigger discipline is the big one. There are so many indicators as to where ships are around you.
Your scanner is probably the most obvious of them but there are other things to look out for such as: the sounds other ships make when they're close to you, the direction approaching ships fire is coming from, as well as your good old fashion visual implants v1.0 (eyes).

It'll get better with practice. If you suspect another ship is going to fly through your field of fire, hold off on the trigger for a second to see where they're going.

As for being blasted trying to dock with a bounty on your head, that too comes with practice.

There's a few ways you can go about that. The easiest is probably just to manually shut down all systems except for sensors and thrusters at around the distance you can request docking. Keep an eye out for circling patrol ships near the docking slot and fly as fast as you can through the slot. There's a lot of ways to sneak in, just look on YouTube for ideas. Or you could skip big stations all together. Since you can pay a bounty off from anywhere in the galaxy, why not try an outpost or a station owned by a faction that doesn't have you on their KOS list? It doesn't even have to be in the same system as the faction that initially tagged you as wanted.

Just my 2c.

Practice, practice, practice, my friend. It'll get easier.

You know that you are allowed to not let them kill you, right?

I'm not sure where I stand on this. On one hand, it's absurd that any advanced society with a concept of justice would mandate the immediate death warrant of a human being for the an accidental "assault".

It's also really inconvenient to have to return to a station. What kind of justice involves dodging a scan on the way in to pay off your fine (for which you may legally be killed)?

It clearly needs a change. That said; anyone actually dying this way or doing it often at all is clearly still learning the game; once you are aware of it, it should rapidly become a non-issue.

Sorry this might sound harsh. Oops I shot someone and the police shot me for it. 200cr is how many tonnes of food and drink. Surprised the local bounty hunters didn't get there first. Would have been enough to retire on.

The thing that annoys me is how, if I get a 200Cr bounty for a trigger error when surrounded by pirates, all the cops immediately ignore the 30,000-210,000 Cr bounty criminals, and turn on me! For heaven's sake!

I have no problem with incurring a minor penalty for a minor error of play, but it's just not sensible to be made the #1 target when there are much bigger fish right there.

To be fair, this really is my only issue with the system, it's like the police chasing a car thief who has so far wrecked hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of vehicles and then letting him go because they witnessed you accidentally knocking somebodies wing mirror off without even giving you the opportunity of making any apology or paying to make good.
