My 14,000 System Journey

+1 rep for sure, very well done. Must have been a lot of hours each day to visit that many systems! This threads inspired me to park the Vulture and head back out into the deep again with the Asp.

wow this is just unbelivable the time spent...I think you are flying an anaconda now eh?how much money did you start with and what is cobra jump range? When exploring do you explore all or skip all icy/rocky planets and just go for black holes and neutron stars/earth like worlds and gas giants?
Not bought the Anaconda yet, but I'll probably do so when I want to do another long range trip. As for scanning, it was a mixture depending on my mood, where I was and where I wanted to get to. I don't scan many full systems but will do so if it's sufficiently interesting. Mostly it's just the main star & ELW candidates. Sometimes it's just honk & jump.

Congratulations, sounds like a nice trip.

I had similar problems selling data too, ended up downloading one of these "automatic mouse" programs, set it up to do the necessary clicks at the right time and just left it running for two nights.

So, begs the question - where next?
I was getting some time outs selling data by the page and seemed to be losing some first discovered tags as a result. So I started selling the more valuable systems individually and only using the page option when I was left with a bunch of low value (and hence less complicated) systems. Maybe not necessary but I'm afraid I lost confidence in the sell page option :(. I considered automating it, but I like to see what I'm selling & take note of the largest payout systems. Became sort of hypnotic in the end to the extent that I didn't really understand why all of a sudden there were no more systems to sell, lol

I'm planning on staying rather closer to home in the immediate future!

I n s a n e !
Guilty as charged :D

If I had actually planned on going to the far side of the galaxy I would have lightened the load a little to get a bit longer range. In the end I didn't need the heatsinks and if I had known that NPC interdictions were going to become so rare, I probably wouldn't even have taken a shield. They were enough of a threat at the time that I thought one necessary along with the larger than strictly necessary thrusters & power distributor.

61 days sounds long (and your trip certainly was) but can you estimate or know how long it actually took you in playtime hours? 61 days can be anything from 61h to 1200h, depending if you played for 1 or 20 hours a day, and isn't really a good measure of time...
Good point. I don't keep track of the hours and even then one "hour" isn't always equal to another. Sometimes I'm really concentrated and get a lot done in an hour, other times I spend more time reading the forums & the likes. Overall, I would like to think I've not been spending more than about 5 hours a day on average but it would probably be more accurate & truthful to put it at about 8 so nearly 500 hours total. Gulp.

Another way of looking at it might be that when I am concentrating, I probably average around 35 systems an hour. Using that it would be around 400 hours.

Incredible journey. Congrats on making it back in one piece! Speaking of, how much hull % was left on your return?

Lessons learned from my jaunt to Sgr A* were:

* Maximize jump distance (by dropping weapons and shields, using D-quality everything but FSD)
* Get the biggest and best quality fuel scoop possible - you'll spend a lot of time using it
* Equip a heat launcher (I didn't have one)

What were your lessons learned?

CMDR, I would have taken a shield anyways. Interdictions are lessened, sure, but you still get normal interdictions in populated systems. They do not always happen, but when you are carrying 200-300 million... I got interdicted about 3 Ls from a station on my way back from Sag A* (carrying about 60 million worth of data). My 3D shield saved my asp!

I like your build a lot, I would have taken 1D distributor though, top end AFMUs, and a dock computer. I always forget how to dock when I am out in the black for a few weeks.

You can - just select the 'desktop view' options on your mobile and you're good to go.
True, but for whatever reason my phone takes ages to load the desktop version. So, yeah, it's more of a convenience thing, but I don't see a good reason why the rep button should not be there in the mobile version.

Interesting. I noticed that I make 30-38 systems per hour as well (depending on how many of them pick my curiosity), so I guess this is a bit of a constant for all explorers that don't operate by the honk-and-go or OMG-I-scan-you-all priciples.

Anyway, impressive numbers. I am not sure if I could muster the motivation to do these daily hours for more than a week, let alone 60 days.
On the other hand, I am really jealous of you. I could never hit these hours even if I wanted to because of RL obligations.

Edit: I also noticed that "The Roncevaux" looks completely pristine on your last shot before the spoiler tag. Did you repair the paint job? Because my Asp shows no sign of wear and tear on the paint, like it did on the trip before. Even though I travelled some long distances in SC during some parts of my current trip it still looks factory new (if we ignore the hull and PP damage that is...:p).

89% hull (it's in the OP ;))

As for lessons, well the main ones were probably learnt before I started this trip but from this one I would add to the list:
- if you're tired then it's easy to do a Father Dougal and be confused between small and far away :D
- in particular black holes are much, much closer than they used to be. Never move towards them unless you really want to.

but the biggest one by far is to de-optimise your controls. It's great to have all the controls you use close to hand but that also makes it easy to make mistakes. If, like me, you find it all too easy to press the FSD button twice & drop out of SC then it helps to have that button a bit of a reach away. Sometimes it's good to force yourself to stop & think rather than be on auto-pilot.

One final one: if on a long trip then be prepared for some disappointment. There are a lot of good explorers out there and many of them don't post on the forums. That cool system you just found may well already have been scanned by someone who is now heading for home. Don't set your hopes on getting the first discovered tag.

Great to see you back home again, Allitnil. :) Congratulations on completing an epic journey for the ages, one of the all-time greats.

There are ways around NPC interdictions depending on how much you might be prepared to exploit game mechanics (legit stuff, just taking advantage of how specific things work). But as it is right now it seems that you can go to a system like 17 Draconis without any real risk. That's where I initially went and where I considered my trip 'complete' and didn't see a single NPC.

Back in February the NPCs were quite active and it was possible to get interdicted by a ship that would mass lock a Cobra so I wanted a power distributor that would be up to boosting away. And I was only supposed to be going to Sag A* so the small extra mass didn't matter.... Otherwise it would have been a 1D. AFMU's were as big as I could afford given the constraints I was setting myself (part of a virtual reset & only earning credits by exploring challenge). I ran through the docking tutorial a few times before coming home ;)

There are a few scrapes, but you have to look closely. It would be great if the paintwork got more & more scuffed up with time but it appears that it suffers a small amount of damage early on and then stays the same :(

Welcome home Allitnil :)

Did you pass through Rendezvous point on the fringe of the Scutum arm on your way back? There's a few of us who have tagged a planet each in that system now. Make sure you get it registered at universal cartographics.

Have you considered retiring the Roncevaux? Its a piece of history now and deserves to be preserved. I did with the DSS Beagle and Shackleton Explorer. Two ships that returned from the depths and that will never be repaired or flown again. One day FD may introduce an orbital ship museum that players can retire ships to. Something worth bearing in mind

That is weird. I could have sworn that the paint suffered a lot more during my last trip (before the debug cam was introduced). When I looked to the left/right I could see paint missing in large spots on the retro-thrusters of my Asp. Right now, I see nothing of the sorts.

Is the paint damage like this for all skins? Or do vanity skins still suffer from heavy wear and tear, but the basic skin doesn't?
Aaargh, there is testing to be done once I get back and find the time to do it. (I would need to buy a skin pack first though...)
