This is the way FD should deal with cheats

I've played mmos in the past that pretty much died due to hackers. Those saying they could get sued etc. Read the t&cs all mmos tell you they allow you to access their server. In an mmo the game isnt yours they can withdraw access at their discretion. To play you agree to those t&cs.

To clarify this, the game is actually yours, but connection to their servers/activation isnt. So you can run the game but cant connect to anything.

We all know there are always going to be cheats in games but the best way is to discourage cheating and give a clear sign to players that cheats won't be tolerated.

FD should ban cheats (not knock them to solo where they can continue to influence the galaxy) and then make a video such as this :

The fun starts 50 seconds in :)

Absolutely this!

Ban them all, no questions asked.

won't change a thing, some / most hack doesn't even touch the game files.

for instance, check on some dedicated forum (they are easy to find), they explain how they change variables value within the RAM while the process is running.

a checksum of the game file doesn't prevent that since said files are 100% the same, only the memory content is altered and this cannot be checked real time.

my 2ents: the game should set the CPU / GPU vcore to 5v upon detecting hacks....oops :cool:

Actually, setting the game to 1FPS would be quite amusing...

Have you seen what hapenned to H1Z1? People are running in GOD mode all the time. There are all kinds of cheats and A LOT of people are using them. It is a disaster and far worse than Elite.

Instead of those videos, the H1Z1 team should make a better product and not create hollow impressions

I posted the video in relation to cheating not in relation to H1Z1 as Iv'e never played the game. This isn't a thread about H1Z1.

The punishment for bad behavior and cheating on Freelancer servers varied from a complete permanent ban to being restricted to a single system with no exits (in ED this could be banned to Solo for a week or whatever).

The other approach was to appoint server police from the playing population and let them have invulnerable ships and super weapons, along with the ability to kick the wrong doer from the server temporarily pending investigation before potential banning, as we have forum moderators could the same thing be applied to the problematic locations on the server.

Haven't Frontier already permanently forced some cheaters into Solo (ie Open still starts solo). I remember reading a post from a cheater a while back saying this had happened.

I liked "I was in Jamaica". I always wanted to see Jamaica... :) And yeah, I wish FD had the balls to actually do something about hackers here.

I am still LMAO picturing a gang of nerds (picturing the burglars wearing taped,horn-rimmed glasses and sporting pocket protectors) ransacking a place for loot and one of them suddenly cries out: "Hold it guys! Drop everything! I found a computer running Elite: Dangerous! Jackpot! I hope you guys remembered to bring your hack scripts so we can infect it,,,,,"

From the way I read this post: It seems that at this time, 'banning' is not an option? I could be wrong and feel as with any game or sport. Cheating means you get banned, cast out, excluded etc.

However, if this is not an option, then why not mark the player. ED offers skin jobs for ships, so lets have some special, well advertised, skin jobs for the offenders. Something in pink maybe and of course, extra soft. A reversed armour effect?

Arry.

*sarcasm* oh that's the way to finally get a paintjob for my conda? brb */sarcasm*

I, for one, would encourage public "naming and shaming" policy, after official investigation is done of course, and perma-ban everyone in case they ignore this warning and continue to do their thing. My respect for FDEV would skyrocket.

I know it's probably not going to happen, though.

As someone who's cheats/pokes got published in Commodore User, WAAAY back in time ;) , it's interesting people are still doing these things.

HOWEVER! It's just not cool to use these on an online game - not even in ED's Solo mode.

Why? Simply because your cheating affects every other player of the game, especially if you use your ill-gotten gains from cheating in Solo, as an advantage in Open.

Even more heinous is when you use these cheats in Open.

Whoever you are, stop doing it. In the end, you're only cheating yourself.

You may not see it that way now, but perhaps one day in the future you'll realise it. And for those of you who'll never realise that - you're a lost cause.

FD should perma ban all cheaters/griefers, sounds harsh but the current tack they've taken is to alter the game for every player (and not for the best) rather than man up a bit.

Examples :

Dumbfire Missile attacks in dock (griefing is cheating IMHO)
Action by FD : all missiles nerfed to the point of uselessness.
Unintended consequence : Nobody wastes space on defences/missiles. All the work that went into missiles/missile defenses thrown away rather than ban griefers.

Bounty cheats (scan your mate's illegal cargo, repeat , repeat, kill him get bounty then his turn. Or do the same with 2 accounts).
Action by FD : all bounties capped at 1,000,000.
Unintended consequence : Whats the point of playing as a pirate if you cant run up a giant bounty and show it off. Less people play as pirates, less fun. 1,000,000 is 30% of my rebuy cost going after a human player, its not worth the risk, less human bounty hunting. Again less fun.

Combat Bond cheating : Park off the nose of a capital ship with turrets set to autofire (with a hacked ship) go to bed wake up a gazillionaire.
Action by FD : Undecided (they might remove cap ships by past performance again less fun)

In dock Ramming griefers (speaks for itself really) new version of dumbfire griefing
Action by FD : Ban people for naming and shaming in the forums, no really this happens.
Unintended consequence : people don't report it, you can ignore it for 6 months like you did the dumbfire issue.

I get accused of being a shill/fanboi on these forums a lot because I tend to defend FD and ED. But I really would like them to grow a pair and go crazy with the ban hammer cheaters/griefers may kill off this game.
