Power play... quite... disappointed

I think it looks awesome, frankly. It gives us:

- The ability to become immersed and emotionally invested in a faction on an official basis, without having to do massive amounts of role-playing (not that that's a bad thing) and cross your fingers that the background simulation will react to your actions (that's a bad thing).
- The ability to directly impact the galaxy map.
- A way to genuinely develop rivalries with other groups of players.

What's not to love?

Yeah your right, even though we can change things now, it just wasn't obvious to the masses.

The background sim is just not promoted, trade/fight/explore are the only obvious features. This patch looks to change that.

Yeah and I will just ignore it probably...

- - - Updated - - -

There will always be room for FD to split a faction if it becomes too powerful. A little story about internal dissent and power struggles is all it takes.

That's so; FD has "executive control"...

1.3 will address a big need, by providing an interface for players to gain rank and influence within their chosen Power for the purpose of helping to shape it's strategies for expansion. What we have now, is factions doing nothing in particular unless forced by devs hands. 1.3 on paper sounds better than what I originally hoped for ED for the long term, which was a kind of faction AI. Hopefully now players will be able to get their hooks into Powers and help steer them in ways which will either determine their success or failure. Player driven (or lets say heavily influenced) Powers should provide much better gameplay value than any kind of behavioural AI ever could.

20 Powers also sounds around about the right number. That's manageable, understandable. We'll see the push and pull of these struggles played out. Powers will be crushed. Others might dominate. It's bound to be heavily dynamic. It will sure beat 10000 blue systems and 10000 red systems (or 1000 tiny sub factions), where you can't tell what's going on.

Missions will now tie into the drives of each Power. Suddenly, you're really working for someone, fighting the good fight. Missions will have meaning. Your rep will increase and so will your influence. You can become invested in helping to shape your Power's strategies.

Missions will generate opposing missons, pitting player against player (something I anticipated for Powerplay). No longer are you just out somewhere looking for a black box all by yourself. The missions you take on may mean you come up against other players who are actively trying to stop you. Or you might be working within a larger team. Winning should require co-ordination and organisation. Strategy.

There you have it.

  • Limted number of Powers means more relatable and observable political push and pull
  • Dynamic Powers (they can be wiped out. They have an active interest in protection and expansion)
  • Player influence over Powers (better than any AI, player can become invested in gaining influence towards the purpose of more control of their chosen Power)
  • Missions with meaning (tied to Power reputation)
  • PVP missions (intense gameplay opportunities, more fun)

etc... (I could go on)

Can someone (anyone) explain what powerplay is?

We already have faction conflict in systems. And they can take control, even change allegiance (alliance - empire).

So what is powerplay exactly?

Powerplay, are polished community goals.
do you remember how fd in early kickstarter said that they know players will identified themself with their ships and they will give everyone tools to customize it, and there was the early artworks that showed one ship in 15 different forms.
what we got instead are paid paintjobs.
- still no passangers
- still no crafting
- still no crew
- still no npc
- still no info on dlc
- still not all of the promised 30 ships

we have 2015 and the first faces in ed are artworks, no 3d model?

the only thing i looking foward is the powerplay eta and the courier and diamondback.

The game has been out a whopping four months. Do you have any idea how much effort goes into the features that FD has piled on in the insanely energetic release cycle they've been pushing? I'm guessing you're not a programmer by profession...

i work as a coder for a company, i exactly now how much work it is, what more interest me is why the 3d modeler working so slow, its like fd fired all and there is only one person who needs to do all the work.

Powerplay does sound interesting, although it does feel like another kick in the goolies for us solo and private group players as it sounds like you need to play online to really experience it. And some of us aren't prepared to deal with the griefers and cheaters , I wonder what's being done about that to support this update.

See I stopped playing for awhile since im quite burnt out and pretty much done everything I want to do... and I was hoping for 1.3 to bring me or us something epic but... im gonna be honest... isent it just the community goals just slightly different and other perks. I was hoping for something big. Anyone else?

I think its more to do with structuring the gameplay - you will feel more like belonging to an area, you will have rivalry with other factions, a lot of what you do will be to help your faction, you will probably get paint jobs and decals to represent your faction, you might get sent on spy missions or assassination missions etc against other rivals. Its going to be a big undertaking but I think its a step forward in giving the game some 'meaning'.

The fact is what would you want to see that is 'Epic'? Many people ask for this sort of thing, but dont have any idea what they actually want. I mean other than the expansions which are surely already being worked on. I see people complain about passengers, crew etc but those on their own wont change the game much at all. It needs to be something extensive and this sounds pretty extensive.

The fact we are getting news feeds in the ships as well will be great - will give you something to do on the long trips.

The only thing I would like to see other than the planet landings is a decent external view system as the one we have looks pretty strange and fisheyed and is very awkward to use.

Oh here we go...it was only a matter of time until the "you don't get muh game development" people came on...

Do you understand the concept of communication to your client? Releasing a product prematurely without full features like multiplayer? And when you do it's only a half measure? (wings currently is the most basic of the basic of multiplayer implementations) Do you understand that marketing and public perception are as important as making money and being able to keep on the lights?

You don't need to be a programmer to understand very basic concepts like "don't over promise and under deliver". And if you do, then at least be very frank and communicate with the client so as to keep brand recognition and segment loyalty high.

But no. please. Tell me how any of that depends on "being a programmer by profession"...for cryin out loud

If you are playing the game you ARE online.

All of this will work just fine in SOLO even if you can't see other players.

I want a secret message delivered by a dying agent which sends me to Sagittarius A where there is a secret station monitoring the Thargoids and I'm the only one who can decode their messages and have to invent a new type of laser to defeat them which requires mining previously unheard-of crystals from a convenient asteroid so that I can save the universe and it turns out that I'm the Emperor's son and am elected head of the Federation and and and

Exactly. What is so hard about communicating to your clients, like the devs do on here every day, or in those weekly updates, the newsletters, the live streams. And the 30+ updates since launch are just proof that they couldn't care less about the product or us, and have no real motivation to improve things other than money. You'd think they could have compressed 5 years of development work into 2, in order to provide us with our entertainment more promptly, eh? If they really cared, they would have sold us a game that becomes free-to-play before it even gets finished like Molyneux did (now there's someone who never over-promises), or provided us with lots of pay-to-win ships we can't use. What charlatans.

I'm certainly cautious as FD have a history of over selling. For me it all depends on how the faction stuff is delivered. If, as it is now, we toil over 0.01's on a dark screen in a menu somewhere, well, no thanks from me. Do remember, FD described the big launch secret/surprise -the background sim- as 'dynamic' & 'living and breathing' galaxy. Nuff said.

If on the other hand they get it right, it could just be amazing! :)

...where there is a secret station monitoring the Thargoids

I have to agree that, like most other people, I would love to see the Thargoids or some other alien threat/civilisation added into the game. And it definitely needs more 'life and soul' more human activity, TV comms, etc.
