Newcomer / Intro Question Regarding Next Ship.

I'm currently flying a Cobra with upgraded cargo capacity to 36, and various other upgrades, that make it pretty good in a fight. (Estimated worth around 1.5 million creds) I really like the versatility of the Utility ships, so the next logical choice would be an Asp, however it's pricetag is a bit offputting. I've have just under 1mil saved

I've currently think of splitting my investment, selling my Cobra and buying a Viper and a Type-6 Transport, thereby having a dedicated fighter and freighter.

Has anyone gone this route? Does it work? Is the Viper a viable long term ship?

Help me Elite Forums, you're my only hope, before I lose what little impluse control I have and pull the trigger.

Both ships are great at their respective jobs (and awful at each other's) the only problem you will have is switching between them.

That's exactly what I have. I went straight to the Viper and farmed a few mil in credits and bought a Type 6. I'll have a clipper before the weekend is out and my clan-mates tell me to sell the T6 as soon as I get the clipper. Not a chance.... for 2 reasons. Clippers can't dock at Outposts and one day I'll likely grab a crate of Red Bull and a couple tons of Funions and head to the outer rim and get my name on a few stars. And the Type 6 makes a damn fine explorer for a modest investment if kitted right.

As far as fighters.....I'll likely acquire a Vulture before too long, but the Viper will always be in my stable. I just really like it. It's feel, it's sound it's look and the good memories I've had in it.

Owning multible ships stached here and there is the norm the more cashflow you get. Go whit viper and the t6 it will pay of in the long run. :D

If you do decide to get all your ships together in the same area, buying a hauler and selling when you get to wherever one of your ships is parked is pretty cheap to do. Hopefully there'll be NPC passenger ships players can board to move around the galaxy in soon.

I can buy them both at Perga city in Kuk, I beleive, and that's my usually log out spot right now, anyway.

I grinded my way up from the Cobra to an Asp in trading rares. What I underestimated initially, that it takes around 6 million to buy the Asp, but around 6 additional million to have it reasonably kitted out. If I had to start all over, I would go with the Type 6 in between and then switch to the Asp. Having a Viper as a second ship is a good idea in order not to become bored too much by trading.

I actually am at a similar position now, I have an Asp and a Vulture. While my first plan was to kit out the Asp for different roles, it did take so much money to dump into this thing I went for the vulture instead. The earning now is not bad compared to trading, both are viable. Exploration is also nice from time to time. But forget mining.

Currently I am doing naval missions in the Vulture so I can buy the Courier as soon as it hits the shops.

Edit: I have also parked all my ships at the same station. It was a pain to get this accomplished.
I currently have an Eagle, Sidewinder, Cobra, a 20% discount Asp, and the Vulture. I kept all smaller ships for risky smuggling missions, as I prefer the "all power to thrusters" approach rather then the "silent running" approach. I only sold my hauler, it brought me bad luck. I used up about 4 of them.

I went from Sidewinder to Cobra to Viper. Then, needed a break from combat. So, I bought a Type-6, ran a route until I had more than enough to buy a Vulture (which I did yesterday).
I don't really consider me a trader, but I did enjoy flying the Type-6. It's a beast of a spacecraft (flew it without shields too to max out cargo capacity) and the sound of the engines is really fantastic!

Personally I'd hope to see a "Hire ferry crew" option or some sort of way for the the player to hitch a ride with another player, to get all your ships together.

That being said. Pulled the trigger.

Type-6, excelent moneymaker, kinda boring, may teach the kids to fly it ;D
Viper: Tried it with 4 gimballed (EGrade) Beam lasers, and it was pretty good, but had heating issues....swapped out 2 of those beam lasers for guided Missile Racks (B Grade), available at most docks, all I can say is... FRACKING WOW! It's not great for extended combat operations, because you only get 12 shotsd with those missiles, but damn! First time I ever held my own against an Anaconda (PvE). Actually made him run, probably could have killed him, if I'd had full ammo when i ran across him, but burning down the shields with the lasers, then two missile salvos, and some not so tender attention to his power plant, he decided I wasn't worth the trouble.

So if you're thinking about a Viper, but on the fence... Just buy it.

Cobra to Python via Type 6 and Type 7, the latter two being used to generate capital by trading. Still got the Cobra but sold the type 6 and 7 for the Python, which I gradually upgraded to nearly all A kit by trading and now killing. It's a better trader than Type 7 and a better killer than most ships. Haven't flown the Cobra for months.
