Newcomer / Intro So my hull was damaged to 41 %

But I made it back to the station in one piece... err... well... some of my pieces were left behind in the RES zone I guess!

At what point do you know for example, if u lost your canopy?
I did for example hear myself taking a breath and I figured yeah, this is a good time to exit stage left.

But since the canopy doesn't take a module spot, at what point do you know you have 'x' amount of minutes of oxygen?
(lol - yeah when you get to 50%, imho, it's time to go!)

side note, thought I was a goner !! :)

<plz don't tell Universal Evil (a.k.a the giver of ships) that I almost destroyed my, err, his vessel!>

If you lose your canopy -- Trust me -- You will know.

You have 5 minutes to get inside a big station. Maybe more time if you upgraded your life support system. If you can slide into the mailslot on a big station the atmosphere will restore. You don't need to dock. Just don't ask how I know this. :)

I think you could also dock at an Outpost, not sure if you need to go into the hanger to get the atmosphere restored or not. That could matter though, if you are down to a few seconds.

And to actually answer the question: when the canopy blows there is a timer in the upper right.

thank you and +1 for ya...

( shoulda asked if you told U.E. bout my near miss before dishing out rep - oh well... live/die and learn! :) )

Hate to sound like the four Yorkshiremen but 41% is bloody lluxury! I limped back into a station the other day after a severe argument with an Elite Anaconda with only 6% of hull left - I knew it was a mistake to make those remarks about his mother!
Always a good idea to upgrade your life support as soon as you can afford to. Those basic 5 mins of oxygen can zip by pretty fast when you are scrambling around looking for the nearest station to make it back to.
How much did 59% of repairs cost you btw?

If you ever do lose your canopy:
a) you'll know
b) you'll have a countdown timer of your air left - get back to a station as fast as you can, or die
c) you only need to make it through the mail slot; you can breathe the orbital's air while you work the adrenaline out of your brain and land gently

yeah, Life Support on Universal Evil's gift Viper is already upgraded to 2D, the repair cost was less than 2k ;)

So the 'breathing' sound I heard? Implications? That my pilot was scared witless ??

That's the great thing about a Viper - small repair costs even for massive amounts of damage. Might I hazard a guess that that heavy breathing you heard might well have been your own? Give my regards to Mr. Evil when you see him next - hell of a player and a true gentleman.

Well if anyone wants to see the countdown - without losing their canopy - all you need to go is go to the modules panel and turn off life support.

I did this by accident while using my AFMU when I was around 18,000 ly out. Luckily I switched back to main view to see the time, which was reading just over 3 minutes and turned it back on.

It was a tad stressful to see how close I had come to blowing myself up.

Hey OP Busted :D :D

Nah it doesn't matter you need the experience of having ones canopy smashed and only have 7,5 minutes and counting left of air to breathe... ;)
And I asume that you did have credits for the insurance if needed... Everybody's who's going to a RES or like me spend time in WZ will at some point in their Piloting life experience the Dangerous of Elite like you just did, and you will proberly also at one point die and feel orsome because you remembered to save credits for the insurance...
It's actually the single most importent thing in Elite ALWAYS have enough for ensurance then everything else in the game can be considered a learning experience ;)

Have fun and I'll be online saturday if you want to go and try a WZ in a wing... (There are less credits per ship to be made but there are a lot more ships to kill and you don't need to scan any of them just blast everthing that is RED :) I made 4-5 mio thursday evening so I can easily cover your viper had it gone wrong for you ;)

Repairs are actually too cheap now.
It cost less to repair my A rated Vulture at over 50% damage than it did to resupply shield cells and chaffe.
It comes to shield cells sometimes when you are 10% from killing a Conda and a couple wings of his buddies in Sidwinders decide to go after your six.
I wasn't quick enough hitting the recharge, but I did get the Conda down before hightailing it out of there.

Last week I tangled with one too many ships in a RES and was shot away to 1% hull, shields gone, canopy gone, life support ticking away. I managed to escape with the 1% hull through the asteroids without taking any more hits, got her into super cruise, and realized at that point that the heads up display does not work when yr canopy is missing.

I had a small corner of canopy left in the upper left, so I kept having to aim that at the nearest station for direction and time to target, then steer blind toward the little dot. Made it into the airlock with plenty of air to spar, but it was kind of a miracle run all the way through

You will see a large part of your canopy gone, any HUD elements that displayed on that portian will not be visable, I once got back to a station with basically no HUD.

Zombiesnack - It's possible to make it to a station 'instruments only', the little radar to the left of the scanner will point you to your currently selected destination, just line that up and adjust course as needed (just an FYI).

+1 for the great story and the clarity of what it means to lose / damage your canopy ;)

Okay - you've asked for it so here goes.
Setting up for 4 Yorkishiremen - warp factor twenty.
Today while I was harmlessly flying around the galaxy handing out 'Save the Beetelbrugian Polka-Dot Whale' leaflets, I accidentally wandered into a red-hot warzone and somehow managed to annoy the crap out of damn near everyone.
On reflection I think it was those 'Give Peace a Chance' and old CND stickers that I had plastered all over my hull! Damn! I knew I should have laid out the extra for that mercenary paint-job.
Nevertheless, I decided to give as much as I was getting and turned my trusty multi-cannons onto the nearest vessel. Imagine my horror when I discovered I had loaded up the special 'Psychedelic Paint' ammunition by mistake!
Geez, it was like something out of Kelly's Heroes!
By the way - if you happen to come across a super-outfitted Anaconda with the slogan 'Grimmest Reaper' just showing beneath a multitude of pretty pink, purple and yellow paint splashes, please pass on my humble apologies.
Anyway, I was doing alright and holding my own - surprisingly the paint ammo proved to be about three times as effective as Pulse Lasers - when the biggest, meanest ship I have ever come across hove into sight.
Lordy I never even knew it was possible to weld four Anacondas together!
The next thing I knew there was a terrible burning smell and clouds of evil-smelling smoke rolling through the cockpit. Why I ever bought that George Foreman grill I don't know!
Anyway, within seconds that wicked looking AnaQuada (see what I did there?) set about dismantling my defences. (If only I hadn't gone to B&Q for those bloody DIY Shield Boosters!)
Before I knew what was happening I was down to 0.00000125% Hull and an Al-Fresco cockpit.
I decided that it was probably time to leave and quickly put four pips into my engines - not a good time to be eating oranges by the way.
With module after module quickly giving out I gave it everything I could, and even added another rubber band to my A6 drive mechanism.
Finally my FSD drive kicked in and I made it out of there with only nanoseconds to spare.
I was not out of the woods yet though by any means.
With no canopy at all left I had no HUD to assist me and - with oxygen reserves already below 5 mins - I quickly set about plotting a course by the stars. It took me a couple of minutes to find the Big Dipper, but finally I had it nailed and had input a suitable station into my Nav system - a Garmin Z1.
Now that was a ride to remember!
I had a flowing white beard by the time my ship limped in to Hutton Orbital!
What about my less than 5 mins of oxygen? I hear you ask. Easy Peasy! I knew those 'Vote UKIP in the Lave By-Election' balloons would come in handy one day and I now see what a wise trading move it was to buy 300t of them.
Have you any idea how much cargo space you need for 300t of inflated ballons by the way? It's the only reason I bought this bloody T500 in the first place!

Hey man no worries. Glad you enjoyed it, and as our mutual friend Mr. Evil said - it is the thought rather than the rep that is important.
Fly safe.
