The Future of Exploration Ship Choices

I doubt we will ever see anything with much higher of a jump range than the anaconda does. Fdev has split of areas of space so we can't get to them. Likely to be used later for interesting things.

Yes, the Cobra is nice. I went from Sidewinder->Hauler->Cobra->Type 6->ASP but now I'm stuck until the Anaconda. That's the reason I posted this, it'd be nice if there was something in between the ASP and the Anaconda.

Imperial Courier??? we can but hope. Either that or an A++ FSD for the Clipper.

I would love a pure exploration ship with huge range (+42 ly), big fuel tank, very agile, strong hull and armor, and no hardpoints for weapons.

Isn't that what the Courrier is going to be ?

Judging by the cockpit and exterior concept art, the Courier will be a smaller ship than the Asp, probably around the size of a Cobra. But I do indeed hope that it will be a very viable explorer with a higher jump range than the Cobra.

I would personally like to see a small explorer, something that could also be used for scouting.

Think Asp canopy stuck on a big engine and not much else :)

I'm currently using the Clipper for my trip to the core. Don't need a ginormous Jump Range there anyway and I really like the unobstructed canopy and the overall style of the ship. It feels more like a high tech science vessel out for exploring. I just dig that more than the worn-down interiors of the Lakon ships.
My hopes are there will be a "real" exploring ship that looks like this in the future. :)

Although I haven't taken it for exploring, I can appreciate that.

I need the Clipper's hot tub and astro-pool tables for science reasons.

If you don't need to get anywhere fast, practically any ship can be used for exploration. There are certain regions where <20ly will certainly hinder your travel time though.

I agree, OP, there needs to be a dedicated explorer ship in the python/fdl price range. I hope the diamondback will be it, but honestly from the picture it looks a bit too small to be that expensive a ship.

People have gone around the galaxy in a SIDEWINDER.

I have seen a few youtube vids of people exploring in Vultures.

Basically, any ship can be an explorer ship, if you know how to outfit it. Personally, I use a Cobra.

The Python has been my favourite explorer so far. I'm sure the asp is a better explorer, but aesthetically I never got on with that ship.

A Python's 27ly jump range, 32t tank and a class 6 scoop means you never have to actually stop to scoop. Also, she just 'feels' awesome, in a kind of ruggedly agile way.

I also have high hopes for a more capable exploration ship, or perhaps as is not infinitely improbable, a new kind of FSD that will provide a much greater range without all this messing around in hyperspace.

I just set off on my 2nd trip in my Clipper. 1st trip was 1500LY from sol towards the center. I learned a lot on that trip. So far I'm 600LY from Sol headed towards the California Nebula. Here is my Clipper lay out:

an extra 10LY per jump would be nice, as would a larger fuel tank. But, the size 7 scoop is incredible. By the time I line up for the next jump my fuel tank is full.

Is there anything you currently can't do in the Asp when exploring? Increased range is just a timesaver, as is a bigger tank (which you can add in 1.3 to ships anyway). I think adding more gameplay elements is the only real way to add more meaningfull exploration ships. For example planetary landings could add a whole range of added modules. You could then add a new ship with lots of room for these modules but only one hardpoint or something like that. FWIW: I went exploring in my Adder with +-28LY range or so, heatsinks, auto-repair units and the whole thing. Never ran into any problems and the total cost was little over half the cost of a basic Asp...

I would like to see a ship which could jump more say 50-60 LY huge tank and extra rugged with spaces for backup jump drives/power modules so exploring was a bit safer. Also it would be nice if it had a "telescope feature" so we can zoom in on planets and nebula we can't jump to.

I agree. It's largely personal preference as the responses show. I think it's a shame that the Hauler and Adder are hampered by such limited cockpit views as I think they would make great 'scout' explorers otherwise. Other ships are somewhat limited by FSD size but you don't need the largest jump range to seriously explore. So while I agree there's a huge jump in credits from an Asp to a Conda, I think a lot of choice already exists.

As an experiment I recently did a clear and started over with a Sidewinder to see how easy/difficult it would be to progress doing just exploring. So far my progression of ships has been Sidewinder -> Adder -> Cobra -> T6. I could have been happy sticking with the Cobra but I do like the Lakon canopies. The T6 can be fitted for a longer jump (29+) and can be fitted with a larger fuel scoop than the Cobra. I will eventually get an Asp, which is my favorite ship in the game so far mainly due to it's versatility, but I'm quite happy with my T6. It handles quite nicely in supercruise.

A new ship truly optimized for exploring would still be interesting. Maybe later in the game when explorers will need to cross thousands of light years quickly to reach fertile exploration grounds.

BTW, if you've been wondering, if you do a clear on your account and change your Cmdr name, the first discoveries you made previously retain the name you had when you discovered them.
