hiding with a night light

i think that when you enter silent mode, all of the lights on the outside of ship and in pit should go dark. silent mode it supposed to be used to avoid detection, so why don't the lights shut off? the only light that should be visible is the thrusters, if you haven't shut them off that is.

Because silent mode is not for avoiding detection, it's for reducing your heat signature and therefore your sensor presence.

I see no reason why it couldn't also turn off your interior lights though. I don't believe ships have external lights, do they (with the exception of the headlights)?

I must have missed something. What is the point of "reducing...your sensor presence" if not to avoid detection? Do you use it to minimize the clutter on other ship's sensors because you consider yourself to be neat and tidy? :)

If you go into silent mode and fly up to someone, you'll be shot at by fixed weapons because you'll be visually detected.
If you go into silent mode and fly behind someone, they'll have no idea you're there because you'll have virtually zero presence on their sensor.

if your flying like that you will still have a visual detection because your using thrusters all over your ship to control it.

It appears people are still confused about the purpose of Silent Running. We not discussing a cloking device. We discussing the ship's ability to reduce it's heat signature. And the only purpose is to aid in avoiding detection, not eliminating all possibility of detection. So, Broken Wolf is correct in wondering about why lights are on while in Silent Running. Of course, the heat from the interior lights are already handled by Silent Running so interior lights should be left to the discretion of the pilot. However, If I were a ship designer, I would have automatically turned off exterior lights during silent running. Has anyone tried turning on exterior lights at an outpost and then enabled silent running to see if the exterior lights are automatically turned off?
