Right now I am en route to Eravate in a travel-van, hauler equipped for travel, and will buy a Sidewinder, only outfit it with 2 fixed multicannons, and pretend it's the Alpha Combat Test. I'll be merciful to players who obviously can't figure out how to turn, but I'll be giving them some action as well! (and hey, they're bound to die a few times in the beginning).

Am I a ganker to you?

EDIT: Maybe a Cargo scanner too :p

My humble view, that is not ganking. Ganking to me is when you deliberately are going out of your way to ruin another players fun for the sake of your own fun.

Doesn't sounds like that is what you are going for, so have fun!! Play fair :)

You're on the rough edge of it, but I'd say no, not quite... partly because you're in a sidey but mainly coz you promise to show the quality of mercy to obvious noobz. I'd say you're a "timely wake up call".

Not rough edge at all - "ganking" means to use overwhelming force, typically by more than 1 person, in attacking another. Eg: A wing of 4 heavily armed ships attacking a lone sidewinder.

That's ganking.

Simply attacking another player 1on1 is just that - attacking a player.

Normally I'd agree with you... except he's stated he'll "be merciful to players who" are obvious noobz, and mercy is not the quality of a ganker. Ganking is an act completely without (or in despite of) empathy and mercy. I'd say this is (barely) within the realms of normal play. It's damn close to it though.

I guess it depends on what your definition of "merciful" is. Are you going to consider having ANY king of comms chatter with said players who are stumbling? Or if they ask for help, will you offer it?

My gut reaction is that you are giving them the lesser version of "meanness". I would go so far as saying you are providing a better "wake-up" call to rookie pilots than some of the buttheads who consider stepping on ants with an elephant as fun.

Overall, it sounds like a better alternative to the GANKERS (purposely capitalized for intent) who fly around in armed to the teeth war ships that "step" on new players.

That depends on your targets. Other Sidewinders? Yes, ganker. FLDs, Clippers, Vultures? A crazy, dead hero (annoyance). And btw, do the right thing and equip Railguns …

If you want to have fun and want that those you interact with have fun to, then RP a bit. Explain why you attack them - a crazy story is enough in my opinion. Everything that gives your "victim" the impression that they get attacked for some reason beside simple being an addition to your game play.

How about a pilot who thinks aliens are mind controlling everybody? Or a paranoid revolutionary or - everybody loves to hate them - a religious zealot who tries to convince everybody to follow his god (and everybody not willing to listen to the WORD will get killed and all heretics, unbelievers …)

If you really want to educate new players, play a pirate. Explain them how this works. Help them.
