Hardware & Technical Nividia GTX 970 questions

Hi any owners out there using this card. I am currently using an Asus 770 and looking at some load results it peaking at around 90% of memory usage nd 85% GPU use. I am also getting some stuttering, do you think a new card would resolve this issue? I am running on an iiyama at 2560 x 1440 if that helps.

Thanks

J

need more system info tbh, depends whats the bottleneck.

970 gives about 35% more power than a 770, which is meaningful but not huge. A 770 is a reasonable card, I wouldn't expect it to be causing major issues tbh

I have a GTX 970 but I only have a 1920x1080 monitor, so I can't tell you that.

It does run on ULTRA on the DK2 at 75fps and at 1080p on the monitor it runs 90-270fps. Without breaking a sweat.

I'm running the Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce...MOAR FANS!!

This thing crushes it when it comes to Elite: Dangerous...I haven't really checked out the GPU usage when running, but the card runs smoothly. Even in stations I'm not seeing much of a drop in FPS...so far only GTA V on max settings has caused it to get noisy and drop framerate.

The stuttering, however, still persists when approaching a planet for the first time in a session. Though, the stuttering at this point has everything to do with the game and nothing to do with hardware.

I have tried 2560 x 1440 with DSR on my 1920x1080 display, and found the framerate too low (45-50 on the docking pad) to be playable. The 970 is fine for 1080p but you won't be too happy with it at 2560 x 1440. Guess you need a Titan X to run ED on that resolution with good framerates.

Upgrading won't get rid of stuttering. I have a fairly high spec. machine (GTX 980, i7 4790, 16GB RAM) and still have the issue. There are various theories regarding the stuttering like inefficient code, laggy network, hardware but no one seems to have pinpointed the cause as yet. You should always use a wired internet connection since wireless can experience dropouts. Also check your internet connection is good. Not all ISPs are the same.

Back to your question about memory and GPU usage, can you provide more details about your current setup?

1. Memory in GB and type (i.e. DDR3...)
2. GPU type, make, memory and memory type
3. Hard drive type e.g SATA, SSD
4. Processor make and type and clock speed

Also have you compared your spec. against FD's minimum spec?

I'm running two 970's at 2560x1440 and it runs between 70-144fps. A gsync monitor is well worth the money when it comes to the frame rate drops. However, since the latest windows 10 build, I have random FPS plunges for about 5 seconds at a time.

Running one of these, too. Well, the G1 Gaming/SoC version which has a Windforce cooler on it, unsure if they do other versions of the Gigabyte 970 with Windforce...used them since the 470 version. Always meaty cards, happy to catch up with a reference/stock 980 when pushed a little more.

I'm running 2 x Asus GTX 970 STRIX in SLI. Was on one card running a 3440x1440 - fine, with no stuttering, but was running hot and with the fans going. 2 in SLI run fairly silent with fans only when working hard.

An R9 290 is another option, and a fraction of the cost. I run 1440p on my overclocked R9 290, and never see less than 60fps. I can even run VSR @ 3200 x 1800 and very rarely dip below 50, maintaining 60+ everywhere except stations and very busy CZs/RESs.

If you wanted to spend a little more you could go for the R9 290X.

Not really a fan of AMD cards. Had a problems with ATI in past so put me off.

gotta say I don't think that should cause stuttering, I don't know what the other forum-goers think but my bet is on it being related to the problems other people have been having with high end rigs. Upgrading might fix your problem, but it also might not.

I thought that but thought it was a shout out. Thanks all.

Commanderhumpster, going back to your original post, with the exception of stuttering, what do you want to achieve by upgrading? Please explain in more detail.

I run the single, cheaper Zotac 970 @ 5760 x 1200 with msaa 1.0 (or whatever aa) with my 6yr i7 875k and it runs 60+ fps fine. I'm still not CPU bound.

I did notice stuttering with later patches of Elite, but with Nvidia's latest drivers it has gotten better - I haven't noticed it as much.

Adding more AA at this resolution became a slide show. However, adding more is not really needed as the lines look crisp enough.
