Ship Builds & Load Outs Ideas for upgrading long-range Cobra

I've only just started playing the game properly, with a Kickstarter special, long-range Cobra. It came with a lot of loaned equipment, but I haven't got much idea what needs to be upgraded first.

My main aim to start with is to get the hang of trading rather than combat. I have installed a docking computer and a fuel scoop over and above the standard loadout. And before I get sneers for the DC, my PC doesn't give many FPS whilst in stations so I figured the DC would help prevent docking issues due to low frame-rate! :)

Suggestions?

If you're looking at trading only, drop anything non-trade related where possible. Weapons, shield gens, discovery scanner, and fill all those slots with the largest possible cargo bays the slots will allow. Offhand, I think you can get upto 60t of cargo capacity. Getting an A Rated Frame Shift Drive asap is a good idea, though you can always work up to it slowly. Higher rated drive = bigger jump range. Less weight from no weapons gives a better range too.

hi if you have low frame rates , don't ditch the shield it provides bump protection & also buys you valuable time to RUN away when interdicted by pirate npc's
if you are trading , you can ditch the fuel scoop , time spent scooping is less time spent trading & you will make more credits per ton , than the fuel scoop will save you in fuel costs.

as the previous post said , ditch the discovery scanner

all interior modules apart from your shield & docking comp should be cargo holds ( make sure you get largest possible for each slot ).

you will have
2x (size 4 compartments) 16 ton cargo racks
2x (size 2 compartments) 4 ton cargo racks

40 ton cargo capacity , your docking computer & your shield for bump & gump protection ( RUN forest RUN )
that's a mighty nice start position & am guessing as kickstarter backer , you got core world area as starting point , so lots of good trading routes nearby
figure on humping metal from extraction world outposts to high tech world starports & returning with bio lichen if you can .. rinse & repeat as often as you have time
eventually as you build up a bigger credit balance , you should net 56k profit on a round/return trip .. tie it in with any easy trade missions from bulletin board that you are happy/confident to do localy & you are well on your way

as previous poster also said , 1st thing to upgrade is that frame shift drive .. (although idk what the ks cobra has fitted & you did not say) LONG RANGE may well mean it already got the "A" fitted
if not then that's what you eventually want to put in. bigger jump range , better fuel economy , more options for fast trade / carry missions . more options for hooking up a bigger wheel of potential trading ports

by "wheel" of trading ports .. I look for a high tech port & then try and find worlds "spoking" off from there to bounce between / around with missions ,
best to concentrate on ones for high tech & industrial starports that have shipyards & outfitters ... they usually carry the most kit & with friendly / allied reputation with them you get access to it

anyhow 40ton cargo cap & a shield & docking comp .. your all set , once you have best frameshift , upgrade your thrusters ... it may help with your flying problems , i'd also stick some shield boosters in the utility mounts
and again as the previous poster said , your trading not fighting , so np doing anything with weapons

if your still having fun trading when you hit 2 million credits , type 6 ship is your next stop.
type 6 with shield in a size 3 compartment & a docking comp. will give you 100 ton cargo cap.

biggest thing to remember is it's not like the 84 elite .. you CANNOT trade & fight in a cobra , you can trade OR fight ... and a fighting cobra has no cargo space.

bump & gump ..... RUN forest RUN

I traded and fought with my Cobra its all about balance.
Anyhow point in hand you should have access to a free ship sell it to get some decent trading Cr.

Still on a laptop, JH - or have you upgraded? Inside stations certainly gets the GPU working.
As for the long-range Cobra, apart from the fuel scoop, mine still has all the loaned kit. No upgrades for this Ironmouse!

Good advice. I'll take them under advisement as the Americans say.

Yes, it's Founder's World start, which is 40-50ly from Sol (where I am now, sightseeing), and of course I got the Sol permit as another Kickstarter perk.

Lol Cody. Yes, still the same laptop. Not much chance of getting more than £300 together to replace it (hoping for that for my birthday in a few months lol).

Here's the loadout I have right now:

2x G1 Pulse lasers (upgraded from fixed mount)
I1 Lightweight Alloys
E4 Power Plant
E4 Thrusters
E4 Frame Shift Drive
E3 Life Support
E3 Power Distributor
E3 Sensors
E4 Fuel Tank
E3 Cargo Rack 8T
E3 Cargo Rack 8T
E4 Shield Generator
E1 Cargo Rack 2T
E1 Standard Docking Computer (is there an upgraded one?)
D1 Fuel Scoop (replaced Discovery Scanner)

That's an idea but I'm gonna keep the Freagle for those occasions when I get fed up trading lol. I started with 40,000 credits, so I'm not short of cash. Currently have traded up to about 68K.

I sold my Freagle, as my Cobra is all I'll need (and have time for), and the cash is handy.

As I said, I've kept it to the stock explorer loadout - all loaned kit (apart from the scoop, which will be upgraded later tonight).

2E/F Pulse Laser x2
1I Lightweight Alloy
4C Power Plant
4D Thrusters
4B Frame Shift Drive
3C Life Support
3D Power Distributor
3C Sensors
4C Fuel Tank (Capacity: 16)
3E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 8) x2
4C Shield Generator
1D Fuel Scoop
1C Detailed Surface Scanner
1D Intermediate Discovery Scanner

It's a cheap, nicely balanced, ship which suits my play-style perfectly - and it's hard to catch!

You can upgrade all of these to D class, they are more powerful than the E class, and lighter weight (longer range) than the higher class ones. Also, D class upgrade is fairly cheap. Just make sure you get a size 4 FSD and don't accidently put in a size 3.

D1 Fuel Scoop (replaced Discovery Scanner)

Fuel is ridiculously cheap. If you're going trading you'll lose more time scooping fuel than you save in fuel costs so put in another cargo hold.
If you are going out long-range exploring, get a size 4 fuel scoop. A size 1 or 2 scoop takes way too long to fill the tank.

Just as a side note, for the OP and the people saying ditch the scoop - imo it depends what you're going to be trading in. If you just want to bimble around a small cluster of local stars (eg, Zaonce, Lave, Diso, Leesti - all close by), then yes, by all means, drop the scoop for extra cargo space. But, I was trading rares in my Cobra, which can require some considerable trips at times, across possibly uninhabited star systems. I'd rather lose 4t of cargo space for a small scoop than run the risk of running out of fuel. Plus, on those long haul trips, I'm pretty sure scooping (Just remember KGB FOAM for the scoopable stars) takes less time than re-routing to a port to refuel.
