Balance is a funny thing...

OP reminded me of one of my favourite all time films. :D

In short, when you hear somebody try and use the slightly tired "If two pilots of equal skill were flying these two equally fitted ships, then XXX should ALWAYS win...". It's not ever that black and white. :D

In the case of the Cobra vs. Asp it very nearly is.

The Asp has three times the shields, more firepower, and better hardpoint placement. Neither ship is nimble enough to avoid the other's fire if they both decide to kill each other. The Cobra can disengage at will, but outside the rare fluke, it will not win if it presses the attack.

Lore should not dictate game balance.

Why not?

Make a tank game where the Panzer II is a viable weapon against a T-90 and you've made a very silly game.

The Eagle is an old, cheap, light fighter. It's place in the game is dictated by the setting and the history this brings.

Speak for yourself. That thing can do pirouettes on an ice cube if you know what you're doing with it.

Almost everyone who knows what they are doing with it is in a stronger ship.

The Asp is a superior ship but a superior pilot can do a lot of damage.

The pilot is generally worth more than the ship.

I do hope that FD are not going to be re-balancing ships.

I agree.

I've spent a lot of time in a lot of ships, and the more time I use them the more I think any tweaking of ship balance would be harmful to gameplay, rather than an improvement.

The way things are now, nobody.

Actually, I fly it to kill stuff, and I manage that just fine. It is, in fact, my combat ship of choice above all others and has been for a long time. I'm still yet to be shot down in one despite taking on various threats that by the numbers alone completely outclass me.

'Stronger' doesn't always mean 'better'.

I think balance is a funny old thing, for what it is worth I could probably lose in any of the ships mentioned to an Eagle flown by an NPC AI, you know the old one from 1.0.

Cheers

The problem with balance is players of all skills and experience will have an opinion, not always for the better. You can't please everyone and constant tinkering and changing of values and ships will likely irritate more players than it pleases. Personally I think the balances is fine, each ship has strengths and weakness and the pilots make the difference, as it should be.

Unless you're referring to alcoholic beverages... Heh!

I made a video recently showing just how good the stock Sidewinder can be if you give it a chance. No upgrades at all and took an Expert Conda down to 40% hull before getting popped.

I didnt expect to win but I was still impressed with how long it held up in a high intensity combat zone.
