Will I lose the beauty of the game by going DK2 now

Hi guys,

I've got £500ish to spend. I have a few options -
.

1. Keep saving and wait for November/Dec when hopefully the Vive at least should be available. (Seems such a long way away..:( )
2. Buy a DK2 now, plus a GTX 970 and live for the moment! (currently have a GTX 670)
3. Buy the 970 plus a better monitor (was thinking of 27" G-Sync) and check out VR again at a later date.
.

I have yet to experience VR but have dreamt about it since a young boy. Been following the Oculus since Kickstarter but never been in a position to afford one. Now I am (just) but consumer versions are just around the corner and Vive with it's lighthouse tech looks amazing.
.

However, I play Elite daily and really feel I am missing out with every game session.
.

One of the things I love about Elite is the beauty of the game. I often now switch to solo just so I can take high res screenshots of the sights while I'm out exploring. I know I will get amazing immersion through the DK2, but what about the planet textures and the like? Will they all look less real and low res? Does anyone have a few screenshots of planets taken through the rift that I can check out?
.

Basically, I'm worried that with a DK2 I will lose the part of the game I like the most - the sheer realism of the planets with their mountains and clouds and so on. Am I right to worry. If not, I think I'm really leaning towards getting a DK2.

I expect you've had lots of threads like this, apologies for that.

tough call imo and it depends on how much you are prepared to write off £300.

I have had mine since July and it has paid for itsself in spades.... but now..... I dunno. IMO you need to try to find someone local so you can try before you buy. Realistically you will probably get 6-9 months out of it before it is obsolete.

If you buy a DK2 and a GTX970 you will loose your own personal 'beauty',
you see, you will develop lines on your face from where the DK2 plastic and foam sits around your eyes,
it also puts pressure on your cheeks and makes you look a little older after a while due to the pushing downwards of your skin,
you also get sweet marks, and a red itchy rash if you wear it to long, which happens, believe me,
so it's a tough call,
tread carefully on this one,
I hope you choose wisely

whilst this is true IF you go mental with it, but its all short term and only if you use it too much!. a few hrs a day is not going to have any lasting effects. I would invest in one of those rift socks however. I didnt, but i should have.

I've had a DK2 since january, and actually most of the time I prefer playing on my 1080p 27' monitor with TrackIR, because the picture is much crisper, it's less bothering to wear, and I can see my keyboard if I need to. Also, recently I installed Reshade, and on the monitor the effects I added make the game a lot more "cinematic" since I went full on JJ Abrams with the settings, adding film grain, lens flare, lens dirt, etc. This would not look good on a VR headset because you go for realism, you don't try to emulate the imperfections of a real camera, and besides the drop in performance is too high to run the DK2 with my Reshade effects, even with my two GTX970.

All of this to say : if you want a great image quality, go for the monitor. If you want to feel like you're inside your ship, go for the DK2, but be prepared for the very low resolution, and the hassle of wearing a heavy headset, along with a few downsides that come with one (such as not seeing your keyboard). Unless you REALLY want to try VR right now, I'd advise you to wait before you get a VR headset, until a proper consumer version comes out.

I can't stand TrackIR. Because the motion isn't 1:1 (or you wouldn't be able to see the screen when looking around) you have to keep your head really still to not look around. Either that, or lose the ability to look a little bit to the right or left or whatever. It hurts my neck. The weight of the Rift is far less uncomfortable for me.

Here is the key part for me " sheer realism of the planets with their mountains and clouds " IMO only with a DK2 can this be truly appreciated to it's full extant.

Your never going to loose the parts you love about ED there only a few toggles in the option panel away

Cheers guys, the feedback is appreciated.

I'm going to order my new GPU today, a 970. I might go for the MSI Gaming addition which I think is meant to be a good overclocker. Eventually though I will go SLI hopefully, so I don't think the OC matters then.

Also, do you think my CPU will be ok for VR. It's a I5 3570 but overclocked to 4.6GHZ. Many thanks

Ok guys. Have ordered a new GTX 970 AND an Oculus Rift DK2. Couldn't help myself!

My boys will be well excited too. (Especially the one getting my old GTX 670 tomorrow when my new card arrives, he's using an old 4 series card)

Thanks again

I did exactly what you are thinking of doing. I wan't even going to look at a DK2 because I knew I'd want one, but one day I visited a planetarium and came home desperate to try out virtual reality for the same experience of immersion.

What I found was that although it is amazing in many ways, the DK2 is also very frustrating. The resolution is poor and you can see the space between the pixels. This makes the text in Elite: Dangerous is hard to read even if you change the colour scheme. You can make the screen look better with supersampling (antialiasing helps but only a little bit) but that introduces intolerable latency in stations, and worse - resource extraction points where I like to hunt. This is with very close to the lowest graphics settings (I usually run set to Ultra on my three monitors) because my graphics card couldn't handle anything better. Some people seem to be okay with 30fps, or maybe they just don't move their heads much.

About my graphics card - here's the thing: I have tried the DK2 on a GeForce 970, a 980 and a Titan Black. There wasn't much to choose between any of them, in fact IMO the 980 performed best, better than the Titan Black which costs twice as much. I have spent countless hours tweaking the configuration to get the best performance from each card, and as many hours again trawling the web looking to see what other people have been doing and to what results.

Here is my conclusion: it's not horrible, in fact it's incredibly impressive and the feeling of immersion is amazing, but if you are worried about losing the beauty of the game then think about being immersed in a 1990s style graphical world of sickly crawling textures, curves with jaggies and text you can hardly read. It's not ready for prime-time and unless, like me, you want it for programming too, I would strongly advise that you wait until the launch of the consumer version. Also, when the CV comes out there are likely to be advances in the available graphics cards you need to drive the thing as well. That alone is worth waiting for.

Don't do it!

Oops, you seem to have gone ahead while I was writing my comment. Oh well. I guess you'll have fun with it anyway, I did. But I'm still just as desperate to get my hands on the CV as I ever was. I hope when it comes you can still afford it because the DK2 is going to be a poor substitute.

No worries lovelock, and thanks for your feedback. I think I am just as excited about getting my new graphics card as I am the rift, and excited for my kids who will no doubt love experiencing the rift. All the best,

This is immersion vs quality again.
Personally, I will not invest in a VR set until it is a high quality consumer release (4k per eye?), even still I might not invest in any VR set at all since as much as I am all for immersion I still like to keep sense of reality (i.e. being able to turn and talk to whoever comes in the room I'm playing ED in)

dont forget, a lot of people that havent tried ED oculus are opining on the quality vs immersion topic.

you wont believe it till you see it. whether thats worth a $500 investment or not is up to you.

ive gotten so much out of the dk2 its not funny.

im literally sickly addicted to assetto corsa at the moment because of the sense of immersion the buttkicker brings.
ED has taken second seat for now, the lack of support for simcommander/simvibe is why...

the demos are pretty insane, but just look at how much content is coming out. early access support all over the place.
you could get your moneys worth on ED alone because the experience is fall of your chair good.
however there is so much more use for the dk2...

assetto corsa, ED, subnautica, GTAV, , demos, and this is just a short list.

I am biased. I love my DK2.
I honestly couldn't imagine playing this game without it. I have tried to do trading on the monitor and even though the text is easier to read the experience becomes hollow for me in 2D.
.
IMO, buy the Rift now. You will enjoy at least 6 months of existing in your cockpit before any CVs are ready.
.
Don't plan on buying a Vive until you've at least seen what Oculus will come out with soon thereafter. Indeed there is a lot of buzz around Vive right now because they've published a CV date, but I highly doubt Oculus and its 2 BILLION $$ are going to allow anyone to surpass them... time will tell tho.
.
One last thing: The DK2 is resolution limited and your pretty planets won't be as crisp as they are in your monitor. The difference is that in the Rift they're actually planets, not just pretty pictures.
.
Good Luck with your decision.

I just spent some time with the DK2 for the first time as it came today and I couldn't wait any longer. With the test demo I was amused, but the quality issues were pretty clear. Then I fired up Elite. It just doesn't matter. I do not regret it for even a picosecond. It is every bit as incredible as everyone says.

there really is something special about turning your head to see whats there..trackIR does'nt even come close. I used to play many many games on my LG 120hz 46" screen..now I only play Elite on my oculus. if you are really interested about vr and want to ride the crest of the tech wave then go for it. "but doc, you cant look over there. there is'nt enough monitor"..."monitor? where we're going, we don't need any monitors"..

p.s. I still play on 670's
