Oculus Rift and mediocre-end PC performance

Hello,

Some days ago I posted my original question about VR and PC performance (and I appreciate the answers there).

I have another question tho. How would experienced VR users here think about, if I would update my gaming rig (specs can be found through above link or below) with another similar display adapted and use them with cross-fire (I am not familiar with this)? I would also consider increasing the amount of RAM.

Let's say I would upgrade my current setup:

  • Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE C3 AM3
  • Display adapter: AMD Radeon HD7800 Series (2Gb memory)
  • RAM: 4Gb 1600MHZ DDR3
  • OS: Windows 7 Professional
  • Motherboard: ASROCK 890GX Pro3

with this kind of setup (changes with bold):

  • Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE C3 AM3 (clocked @ 3.20 GHz)
  • Display adapters: 2x (cross-fire) AMD Radeon HD7800 Series (2Gb memory)
  • RAM: 8Gb 1600MHZ DDR3
  • OS: Windows 7 Professional
  • Motherboard: ASROCK 890GX Pro3

Could the above setup run ED with Oculus properly? Or instead: you could post experiences about your own VR setup experience, so I could get a rough understanding about what kind of VR enhanced PC-rig I would need in order to get most out of the VR experience.

ED doesnt support crossfire right now. I have 2x 7950's paired with an FX8350 processor. To get a good rift experience I dropped a 970 in a small build I had running an A10-7850k APU and get great performance. I wouldnt bother adding another 7800 If I were you, I would spring for a 970 minimum or just save and rebuild your whole rig. Phenom II's were good chips in there day (I had a 940), but they are well past theirprime.

I have to agree - rather than upgrade rebuild. Best performance is coming from the intel / nvidia camps if you are looking at VR. At least for now.

And the trap has sprung, welcome to VR where we all live on the tiptee edge of computer technology. Most VR users find themselves upgrading their entire systems to get peak performance out of their Rifts. Unfortunately the Rift is from the future and right now you can get close but not quite where you need to be to get it working at peak performance. There is a ray of hope, and if you upgrade your system now to the best possible setup, you may just have to upgrade your video card in the future to get it all working the way you would expect, patience will be rewarded.
