How long will it take to make it to Elite status and do we get a badge?

How long is it likely to take to make it up to Elite status in ED, and will we get an Elite badge?

Is there a 'race' on to make it to Elite and do early big backers have an unfair advantage?

Well most games have a designed play time, and I'm betting a lot of people here will have worked through Elite and Frontier and made it up to Elite status or at least know someone who has and have an idea of the playtime it takes to make it to 'Elite'.

I'm surprised there is no mention on prizes for the first players to make it to Elite, I would have thought even something as simple as a limited edition badge would get a lot of players interested.

Of course gold limited edition Elite badges for the first X Elite status players would probably get more of an impact and could even help bolster Alpha uptake.

would be nice if you could unlock a code for the store at dangerous and elite levels to enable you to buy merchandise.

Tshirts, metal logo's, car stickers.

Years hopefully

Really depends on how much you play the game I suppose.

I'd hope we get more than a badge though! I would hope the first person to reach Elite status in any particular class will be given a secret and exclusive mission - similar to the original game.

For example the first "Elite" pirate will be given the co-ordinates of a space version of the Spanish Treasure fleet. Maybe a Federal Treasure fleet in this case.

The first Elite Bounty Hunter would be given the whereabouts of the most notorious NPC pirate and tasked to go bring him to justice.

First Elite explorer is given a mission to locate Raaxla.

etc...

In the old days of original ELITE, took me a couple of months I guess to make ELITE rating. But then again, I was a kid and I sacrificed school grades to get ELITE status :)

Maybe it'll take couple of months, depending on which profession. Back then, ELITE was determined solely by kills. Now? I dunno.

The only possible problem with determining who's "first" could be that only people who play online, or solo online at the minimum, to be "eligible". That would exclude some people who may be playing SP Offline.

Elite status can be achieved not only through combat.
Original Elite indeed had a badge you could send for if you got to Elite status and there has been much clamour for a return of this.

I still had my metal Acornsoft 'Deadly' badge until 2-3 years ago.. I lost it :(

I worked so hard for that, would be awesome to have something like it.

Most probably months of human hours, which can translate into several years for adult working full time. Also you can achieve Elite status in other ways now not just kills. So variety is there.

Open world sandbox games really doesn't have ETA on how long you will play game. There's always lot to do, and it seems for FD is decided that you will never ran out from things to do.

I played Frontier for months on end without getting anywhere near Elite. But then I spent most of my time Exploring, Mining and Trading so I'm more hopeful with ED ;)

I will mostly be trading with some exploring now and then, I will get Elite some day, not fussed when. 1985 was a bad year for homework and things have changed a lot since then.

Firstly, until the game is released at minimum, Beta stage (in other words, has most of the full game and ranking in it) we (non-Frontier players) won't know for certain (unless someone at Frontier makes a statement or releases information on this).

Yes you will get a decal for your ship. It will be silver unless you pledged at Founder level or higher, then it will be gold.

At the time of Elite, I think you had to send your save to prove you'd made it (I wasn't even aware of this at the time). I don't know if they did the same thing with FE2 or FFE. With E: D, no matter which way you play, proving it will be easier. As has been mentioned, those playing online will be connected and Frontier should know when you make Elite status. Those playing offline, it is a simple matter of uploading your save.

I hope it takes skill, commitment and a lot of time. Sorry this is not instant gratification headshots, look I killed ten players there in this shooter. The main thing is no one new to the game is not going to get Elite anytime soon and certainly not in weeks. So if you plan to come in and impress think again this is old school.

I always think Elite has no bragging rights as it’s a personal journey that can be achieved in different ways and levels of difficulty. Did you take an easy route and was luck on your side who knows but yourself.

I think I remember Mr Braben stating that Elite status will require more than just combat.

I do too.

The idea that you are ranked on how many people you have murdered does seem a little weird, and I think that moving away from "kills" as a pure measure would be a Good Thing™. While it worked well in Elite before now there were technical limits, so the blunt instrument was the best there was. We have the ability to make a more refined measure, one more about reputation in a role for example, then we should.
I don't see why, for example, an explorer out on his or her own with very few ships to shoot down should be essentially denied the ability to make the rank, maybe part of the ranking system should be resources discovered, or paths to locations mapped and verified.

"A more civilised [idea] for a more civilised age."

As always combat and the status of who you killed will be important but I hope they take so much more into consideration like Distance travelled, Time in game, set of achievements that need to be complete and missions be it to rescue or hunt down. If you risked all in exploring and were the first to map a system you should be duly rewarded.

The possibility is endless. If you’ve helped shape some part of the universe it has to count. But it has to be fluid and seamless so you don’t get the impression your ticking down boxes.

I’ve got the feeling if your hell bent on killing and only killing the game and its community will very quickly end it for you. Elite as a game has to be respected and played in a certain spirit in my view.

I disagree. I feel you should be able to play it in any way that you wish. If you want to be friendly that's fine. If you want to be a pirate and hunt down other players and kill them, that should be fine too. Just accept that your standing with the authorities will drop and you will likely be painting a target on your back if you do.

Indeed. By "reputation" I meant it in your role(s). So the Dread Pirate Roberts has an incredible reputation, as a Pirate, and deservedly so due to his/her daring tactics and audacious ambushes. (S)he will have attracted the attention of authorities, but that's the game they wish.
Likewise Dora the Explorer has an incredible reputation for finding new regions of space and safe passage to them.

I see no reason why both can't obtain the rank of elite for completely different reasons.
