I thought he was showing just how small of a distance 10k ly is. I'm only 7.5k out and it's weird to look at the map and see the small amount of territory I've covered.

I, as a self-admitted noob explorer, took no offense to his terminology. Especially with the emoticon. As others have said, he's showing us that what seems like a vast distance is actually pretty small on the galaxy map*. The 'story of space' as it were: "Oh, you think that's 'big'? You ain't seen nothin' yet."
EDIT:
* - Lots of actual explorers (as evidenced by the 30K ly remark) already realize this. Hence the addressing noobs like me.

Was basically trying to demonstrate how big the game universe is. Lots of forum posts about exploring talk of distances of 10k + and as I was siting at almost exactly 10k from my home in my current bout of exploration, I thought I'd show it on the map.
10k doesn't look much, but it's still a long way from home when you're a scan freak.
