Blocking players

Can you do it from the menu?

I just get a message saying no blocked players?

Open is fun. The system is not in place to deal with eeeejits. I'd like to play in open for the interaction with other gentlemanly players (if I may be so bold).

The quality of this game is pretty poor without good reason... and David know's it. I looked him in the eyes.

Press the #2 on your keyboard.
Scroll right to the second icon. Click it.
Choose Block Player.

I don't think this is what Ben meant, since it doesn't really make sure you won't meet him again.

But i won't go into the networking possibilities, since i refuse to give guidance to ruin someone elses day with out of game measures. ;)

Edit: OOOps, looks like i was wrong, sorry

Blast can t I write their name down on a bit of paper and then go to he block player bit and type it in?

never tried before...but just did.
strangely i can block players from my friendlist.
so maybe search for them, do a friend invite and then block them? i'll try with you... so don't worry if you get a friend request, it's just temporary ;)

Edit: nope, doesn't work.
You can actually only block players that have accepted the friend request that way... stupid.

Edit2: of course you can try to send a friend request... and if he accepts, you can block him ;)

Dunno. You must really hate this person!

Nah no hate. He was very bad to a chap who just wanted to have fun on a weekend, playing fair and square in open for the first time after almost a year of solo. In many ways you could call him a new player even though he was a backer that helped make this game happen. He was bored and had ground his way to an anaconda only to be rammed to death by a bunch of fools.

Like a brothel, you can choose the bricks that make it but you cant choose the customers.

I like your space crusier

Seems like a bit of a flaw in the whole crime update and anti cheat moves.

but you know, that blockin a player just makes sure he can't communicate with you?
for instancing it just makes is less likely to meet him, not impossible.

Really! This just gets more interesting by the second. So even the convoluted block doesn't work? Ah well never mind eh.

Does it just make them unable to send you messages? Or does it do anything else?

The official story from the devs is it will put them down the matchmaking queue for you.
Its a bit vague as to how that will actually work.

Its not as simple as just making you not see that player. When you fly around you can be connected to up to 31 (can't say I've noticed more than 16) other players. Some or all of them might be off your scanner range, so you wont actually see all the players. You can't just make one of the 32 players in a system invisible, while still seeing the others.

If blocking works, and there are 10 players where you arrive, you will connect to these 10, and they will connect to you. If one of these players is blocked you wont connect to any of them. You will just see empty space.

If you are in a system with 10 other players, and someone who you have blocked arrives they will not join to any of the 10 players. They will just see empty space.

Things get more complicated if someone in your friends list is connected to your banned guy. Should the game connect you because you want to see your friend, or should it make you not see either of them?

The other part of it is "putting them down the matchmaking queue". This might mean nothing happens unless there are over 31 players where you arrive. Outside of popular systems and CGs thats probably never, so the block might do nothing.

I might block one of the code guys at Diso to see what happens, anyone know if you can unblock someone after you have blocked them?

Blocking just blocks communucation rather than stops them being in your instance doesn't it? At best it may reduce the chance of meeting them.

Is it wise to block communication from someone who can be in the same instance and may be trying to negotiate a price rather than blow you up?

"Hello Commanders!

In this instance, blocking the Commander might prove quite useful.

When you block somebody, a couple of things should happen.

Firstly, you will receive no communications from them.

Secondly, during any transition where matchmaking is at work (so basically, hyperspace jumps, entering and exiting super cruise) you are much less likely to be matched with the blocked Commander.

Blocking becomes weaker when it comes up against friends (and next year, player wings), because if a blocked Commander is in the same session as a friend (say, because they haven't blocked the Commander, the blocking effect is overruled by the friendship matchmaking.

Outside of this case though, blocking should work fine."

Do you think some descriptive text would help in the Menu to explain each panel of the Friends and Group Management section?

Zplintz you've got a very good point. In my naivety, I could spend ages looking to block some one in the menu then eventually find a way to block them in the communications panel and think I'll never see them again. Then one day they turn up saying hand over your cargo but I dont hear them so the kill me again. I start shouting grief etc.

People are not clever.
