Clipper or ASP

Hey,
I'm about to set off on a big exploration adventure, and currently I'm flying a combat-fit clipper. I'm about to spend a chunk of my credits on a python in Zaonce so I don't have to worry about loosing out on that 16% discount while I'm gone, which leaves me with enough credits to either completely strip down the clipper and fully fit out an exploration ASP with this fitting (33.72ly range) or retrofit my clipper to this fitting (25.83ly range). I know the ASP is the logical choice, but basically I want know which you guys will make a more enjoyable long-haul exploration experience? I'm not super concerned about heading out to the galactic arms, which I know is where having the biggest jump range is most useful, but obviously having a long jump range is still useful in its own right for making greater progress. On the flipside I've heard great things about the views you can get exploring with the clippers massive wrap-around cockpit and such. So, opinions please? :)

Asp. Front view isn't bad, and the overhead view is really good. Best thing about the asp is the fuel tank, not max jump. If you hit a brown zone in the clipper, it's a real pain to constantly hunt for scoopables. The asp can just power through.
Don't forget the asp discount at alioth

your asp has a range of 33.72 not 36.41 ! unless you carefully plan to get to next star on fumes every time

p.s. 30 LY is more than enough unless you go galactic arm scanning

Definitely go ASP then? What are other peoples opinions? What about the fitting as well, is that okay?

Personally I only use the Clipper for short range trips (Orion/Barnards loop) That fuel tank becomes a real pain, especially when you hit brown dwarf or T tauri regions.

Good news is powerplay will fix the tank issues. I'll explore in anything, I like the challenge, too easy in a ASP/Conda unless you are heading to remote regions.. But still that clippers tank......

What about if I wanted to get to Sag A* with it?

Dognosh is right, Asp is really the only long range exploration ship. The fuel capacity added to the jump range make it so much better. Even if the clipper is only 20% less range and 20% more often fuelling, that still adds up to DAYS on very long trips.

If you are going the exploration route, get the Asp. If you just wanna pop a couple thousand light years for some local tourism keep the clipper but be prepared to use the debug cam to truly enjoy what you see.

Your fittings are great. Could lose the shield for a few .lys but up to you. Those extra lys only come in handy for reaching very hard to reach places. Consider an AFM. I just went on a long trip and didn't take one, and I'm probably going to make it but when I think about it, that was really stupid. It's not vital for short trips but going to the core or something, you'll accumulate dmg no matter what you do and last thing you want is your fuel scoop or thrusters to go :p

Hmm okay, I think perhaps I should get an ASP then. I love the clipper as a ship, but I really want to try a proper exploration adventure. The only thing close I've done before this was about a 2500ly round trip with a cobra, but nowhere special - I was hoping to go properly sight-seeing.

Ahh of course, I'd forgotten about the AFM! If I get it and keep it offline it should have no mass or power, so no impact on performance right?

Your asp fitting is very close to mine which has just gone to far rim, back today or tomorrow, except :
My pp is A rated, keeps the temp down
I have a 5b amfu
I have the d life support, but it doesn't really matter
I have a dc. Haven't docked in 4 weeks. How good am I going to be?

try mine, it is comfy and a range of over 30 !!!

use mine as a base, then adjust it in EDS to suit you, add chaff if you want ! remove one AFM if you want :)
Ah thank you! Between the boosters and the 6D shield, thats a fair amount of shielding - is there a lot to protect from in the black of space? I thought you stopped seeing NPC's after about 200ly anyway?

Turning something of doesn't disable it's mass:)

I think AFM's dont have any mass to begin with though? :)

Yea, I suppose if youre on the other side of the galaxy 25 minutes life support probably doesnt really make any difference.. Whats a dc?

On my trip to Sag A* I passed through a pretty vast field of non scoopable stars. That was in a T9, I went to Econ mode and trucked through it with 64T of fuel.

No real technical challenge to getting to Sag A*, that region was the only time I had to think about fuel. You could go to Sag A* in any ship.

Yeah no power or mass, get 2! Can always rebuy the clipper with the profits if you go Sag A*
