Newcomer / Intro How do I determine if it's safe to pirate in an area?

Hey,

Was thinking about turning Pirate for a little to see what it's like.

I know I'll need either good skill at docking or a Black Market to sell stuff. But my main concern is how I identify an area where I won't pick up bounties for killing?

I see that some stations are an Anarchy government so A) is it these I need? and B) Do I just kill close to their area of control? If so, how do I determine that?

Also, can illegal loot be sold in standard stations or am I always going to need a black market?

Hi,

I don't pirate but it's certainly a valid career choice in Elite Dangerous!

You need to find a system with the government type being anarchy. Cargo you pick up is always marked as stolen so can only be sold at Black Markets.

Have fun.

Hi.

So it's the system government and NOT the station government?

Am I right in saying that i can shoot anything there and not get a bounty on me? I was a little worried about picking up bounties elsewhere whilst shooting in Anarchy, does that happen?

The system needs to have Allegiance: None (no wanted status) and preferably an outpost (no security check) with Black market close to the main star.

In an anarchy system you dont pick up bounties, ever. Find an anarchy system with a nice outpost including a black market, and use that as your base.

Thanks guys.

Just did a map search and there are no (at least I couldnt see on the map) systems with Allegiance: None. Is this correct?

How do I check that there is no security check other than flying then and loitering with intent?

I assume a Cobra over a Viper would be the choice ship due to its cargo size?

I think you need to develop a more... shall we say "piratical" attitude if you're going to succeed in this venture.

Avast there... and suchlike.

if you have faction rep with the FED's the dropships also a good pick due to the huge hard point and also the cargo space jump range is abit hmmm , but the rest of the ship's nice for playing BH or pirate

use the government filter =anarchy

and yes get a cobra

Or would it be possible to buy a warrant scanner as well as a cargo scanner and only target ships with both cargo to take and a bounty? Pirate the pirate sort of thing. That way you get the (illegal) cargo and the bounty all in one?

While it's possible to fit both kill warrant and cargo scanner, I find it's better to use those utility slots for other things like Kill Warrant Scanner (KWS), Chaff Launcher, Shield Booster, and Frame Shift Scanner (FSS)... it's fun to chase down that juicy bounty that escaped at 1% hull :D

You'll get plenty of credits from the bounty alone, and you should get enough cargo from simply targeting their cargo hatch.

I think the most fun anti-pirate experience is taking the gold-bait from the Strong Signal Sources (SSS) :D

The OP seems to indicate that you may need a clarification about black markets.

Lots of 'Regular Stations' have black markets, and not every outpost has a black market.
You need to sell stolen goods and illegal cargo on a black market even in Anarchy systems.

Outposts are useful due to lesser security (fewer scans) but this is not relevant in Anarchy
