Helloo, I personally think Kickstarter is a great idea, the reason being that the Outsider was delayed due to funding problems, being as stated that it was going to be the forefront technology for Elite 4 tells you that problems exist in that area. Why would there be an outflux of commercial stuff such as Kinectimals if the company had the spare cash to cough up the rest of this project as well as Elite 4. If we want it to happen David needs to know for sure that there will be financial security in the project, and kickstarter is the 'voting' place to show that, even if the full amount is not needed, at least then interest is fully voted for, the reason I say this is because the guy has already expressed how perfect he wants it to turn out, therefore he needs to know that the public is behind him. I think it's a confidence thing, that's why he's hanging back.
Maybe that is the cause of vapour-ware (perfectionism), and advancing projects based on and competing with what he wishes to do himself are causing question into how much he should invest, he is constantly under threat from people trying to recreate his own masterpiece.
I think he is hanging back, when what really made Elite a masterpiece was down to the dark lonely atmosphere, space was very big, and the sense of humour of the bizarre descriptions (random generation) and the feel of the whole thing.
I played Atari ST Elite, but it wasn't the same, it was too bright, it didn't have the dark lostness of the original, but that is just down to how I felt about the game.
David isn't Elite, he's a fellah who produced an amazing atmospheric who isn't sure how to follow it up.
Kickstarter, buy him time and confidence. More confidence, more decisive decisions.
Maybe I'm being daft, but that's how I see it.
