Elite Dangerous Funding

Even setting the value of owning and playing the game aside, it won't take very many updates, even if they're priced quite cheaply, to amount to a very respectable return on an £80 investment. A far better yield than you could reasonably expect from shares :)

unless the game goes viral like the original did :p

RMG gave me a little cash boost for Elite. I just cashed in on them. I'm planning on keeping it aside for a VR headset - CastAR, OR, Valve VR...I trust David Braben what ever he produces. I would pledge to a CastAR stretch goal...

This Has Been in the Back of My Mind......

Since the day of the Alpha's release where somebody showed a link for how well Frontier Developments or the game itself doing well on the stock market pages.

Is it really?

I have been thinking investing money into this one would be good idea. But I don't know much about this buisness and don't have much money to invest. Not much at all. Isn't $10,000.00 AUD like the minimum you need to buy stocks in the first place.

No, I don't have stock portfolio, but what a place to start making money.

BUt i don't rally understand it all and some of your replies here about it being better to pledge as backer for this game as I have done, than to invest in the company/game on the stock market.

Investment is usually large amount/long time affair. You will get sooner/better returns both in monetary and sentimental/entertainment value backing game as a one of backers. However, if long term investments is your thing, I will guess FD seems posed like good buy.

Ditto - plus I wanted to support the kickstarter and help get the game made... plus the extra in game stuff is cool as well :D
Totally agree with that. This series has been a passion of mine for a long time, and although I haven't played those games in a long time the memories are still strong and I wanted to make sure this happened! If it had failed to achieve its funding it would have been a tragedy, with all the rumours over the years of an Elite IV being in the works. But I am reasonably certain that private backers may have covered this anyway, at least I hope they would have.

yeah.... this^

i backed because i wanted to play the game. i hope frontier do well out of it but i have no interest in making money out of the project, other than in game credits of course

Share price has gone up around 35% since I said it was probably a good time to invest. I should be an analyst! If only I had a trading account and some money...

If you want to support the game directly, buy access to alpha. If you want to support it indirectly, either tell everyone you know about the game or buy the books and tell everyone about them and if you want to speculate and maybe make some money buy stock. If you don't want to risk your own money, boil a chicken and make your own stock!

For most people supporting the game indirectly is the cheapest option and possibly the best for Elite by buying an audiobook as a Christmas present for someone.

Buying £150 worth of shares would be totally pointless. The spread and fees would make such a tiny trade pointless.

I am wondering why people buy the expensive options for when they want to supporting Elite Dangerous development? Why don't people just buy Frontier stock? It is the job of shareholders to fund a company. If Frontier and their shareholders can't fund it then may they should sell stock in the project ED. Then I will stump up for more than my Federal Trader purchase. I have bought the game and paid upfront waving any interest charges. If the scheme goes belly up I will lose my £37 that's my risk. If it all works out I get to play Elite Dangerous that's my reward. If the shareholders do not put their hand in their pocket and fund the development of ED why should they take all the profit without all the risk. Why are people spending £150 buying founding member pledge and not stock? I cannot comprehend this could someone please explain? Being a stock owner you have a voice. I would love it if we could say 60% of the profit of ED must go back into it for development, maintenance and support. :D

May be we should set-up an Elite Supporters Trust where we can all club together and buy Frontier stock? As a stockholder the trust would also have a voice and could back Elite Dangerous to the hilt. There is already a model in the Arsenal Supporters Trust http://www.arsenaltrust.org/about/introducing-the-ast

It was very good that there was the opportunity to be a backer. Without it, we would not have known the intensity of Kickstarter, the family spirit of the forums, complicity with the Frontier team. Yes really, without backers, the atmosphere would not have been the same. And in addition We have pride to be backers, is not it ?

Without the kickstarter all the side projects that it has spawned would never have happened. I would never have had the chance to write a piece of fiction for the Elite: Dangerous setting.

And THIS would never have happened :D

Isn't $10,000.00 the minimum you can invest in anything like that.

Err, no.

You could technically buy a single share (about £1.66 last time I looked) if you wanted. Given that the fee to trade is around £10, you need to buy a reasonable amount of stock to nullify the trade fee. £500 to £1000 is typically the minimum you'd practicality put in.

Probably worth mentioning that investments can go up as well as down. :)

I happen to work in this industry so if it would be helpful I could share my thoughts.

The stock is trading on AIM, which is the junior version of the London Stock exchange, this is a suitable market for the company is it is a low cost environment, but also means there will be a greatly reduced number of institutions and analysts looking at it. This could be an opportunity for us to pick up overlooked shares, but could equally mean the shares slump for extended period making it difficult to sell at a value you feel is justified.

It launched on this market back in July this year at 127p per share and has a total of 31,156,892 shares valuing the company at launch about £40m. That value has swung since between a low of £29m and a high of £51m. However, I should point out that valuations on AIM can often be rather illusory as so few shares get traded. I expect at the level of a private individual you could buy a few hundred pounds of shares at most levels, but a larger order my not be filled at those prices.

To compare the valuation of the company to something we can look at the results for their 2013 year which runs from April 2012 to May 2013. Here we see they had total sales of £12m and made a profit (EBITDA) on that of £3.6m, although that figure has been adjusted to remove certain costs around the floatation.

On simple terms then you could say that at the current valuation of £47m the company is able to earn £3.6m, or simplistically, pay for itself in 13 years. This is a fairly average multiple for an average quoted stock. Although much higher than you would pay for a business privately, say if you were buying a local business in your home town.

Again in simple terms I find that a fairly full valuation and feel no need to rush to buy shares. That said I wish I had noticed when the value dropped to just 29m, I would have immediately bought £10k of shares personally if they were there to be had.

However, the important thing to remember here if that Frontier is a business that is changing its business model. They are moving from a company that makes games for other people, to a company that is making their own game, ED. So the above figures are for the old business model, not the new. Albeit the money raised through kickstarter is going through the accounts so is boosting revenue.

When ED is launched, if successful could be a step change for the company, and after seeing the quality of the Alpha, I’m sure it will be. Although I have not taken the time to run any projections on what that might mean for the company in terms of revenues or profits, I don’t think I have the information to do that correctly.

Not that I am giving anyone advice, but if you did buy shares at the current price I hardly think you are doing anything foolish, not if you have faith in ED. That said, I will still be watching for a lower price before taking a position myself. I think I will acquire shares before the games launch, but feel no need to rush, there is plenty of time before then and I can pretty much guarantee that no matter how good the alpha and beta goes, no one in the investment industry will pay much attention until the game launches and actual sales figures emerge. This gives us fans plenty of time to take a leisurely view of how good ED will be, and plenty of time to buy shares if we wanted.

what frontier need to do is replace those banners in front of the star port with ads from coca cola and other companies that want to do this. i mean you see them in movies so why would'nt they want to do this....anyone think this is a good idea? and change out the pictures on the banners every update or so....
