Has anyone else noticed the FSD countdown...

She also lacks respect. She should say Sir or Madam after each countdown. 4 Sir, 3 Sir. Manners in this game are appalling.

If she said it on the numbers, then she'd be saying 'engage' at the exact moment you engaged, and, well, what would be the point of that ? I think we psychologically expect the action that has been spoken to FOLLOW hearing the word. If SC was engaged at the exact moment she said it, then she might as well say 'engageD' - as in, 'SC has been engaded'

I think it used to do this during the beta at one point, and you could hardly hear her say it.

You could have her say 'engage' instead of 'one', but that would be weird. So, yeah, the numbers are off, but it's because we expect it to sound that way

I have to say Ive turned off the ships voice for most things nowadays. I keep it just to when Im under attack, when my target's shields are down and when they've engaged their FSD...

For everything else I prefer the little bleeps and ship sounds.

Oh I have to say I understand stylistically why it happens. But even in a real countdown you sometimes have callouts instead of numbers. 5...4...ignition...2...1...release...we have lift off. Yeah... the Jump sound is pretty jarring so I'd understand that she would get lost in the background... and no woman want to not be listened to, even if she is just a ships computer... (ducks and expect fallout for being sexist...)

You do realise this was not a serious rfc, just a humorous observation?

I always assumed it was to account for players with high ping as much of the game is server side. If she called it the other end of the 'second' then you could receive the message aftter the fact?
Not sure though just something I convinced myself of...

I think this happens to match the number you see on the screen (ignoring the decimals) with the speech. She says "four" while you see the number 4 lasting a second. I guess it would have looked odd to see a different number than the one announced. And then we would have been bothered by all the people saying "hey, that b*tch said 'four' but the number displayed is 3! !"

[PC] FTL countdown voice out of synce with on screen timer

The friendship drive charging voiceover on the countdown is off by 1 second.

She says 4 on 5
She says 3 on 4
She says 2 on 3
She says 1 on 2

She finishes announcing four at about 4.00, three at about 3.00. What's the problem with that? You will never here engaging then as you will already be in SC or HJ.

I noticed this a while ago and I've been thinking about mentioning on the forum but figured it must have been discussed to death in the alpha and beta stages.

The voice announces "Four" at 4.99 not at 4.00, "Three" at 3.99 etc. etc.
"Engaging" should happen at 0.00 but happens at 0.99.

You say that like its a bad thing, she aint no Picard.
I could quite happily not hear her chirp engage another 1,000 times.

Typically with a countdown you don't hear a zero.
In step you should get
5.00 "five"
4.00 "four"
3.00 "three"
2.00 "two"
1.00 "one"
0.00 <Event happens , "Liftoff / engage / bang / etc" >

Any liftoff that might be uttered generally has pronunciation begining moments post event
of course if its a bomb countdown one is the last thing you hear maybe z if the counter is slightly ahead but I would never expect to hear zero.

what you have is
5.99 "five"
4.99 "four"
3.99 "three"
2.99 "two"
1.99 "one"
0.99 "ahem"
0.00 <Event happens >

Yes, this topic was done to death ages ago.

The countdown should be integer only, and her voice should simply match the integer number shown. This is exactly what you'll see in basically every rocket launch in history because it's intuitive and it makes sense.

So we should see:-
4 - She should say 4
3 - She should say 3
2 - She should say 2
1 - She should say 1
...She should engage....

But alas, FD have never agreed so here we still are :/ Clearly FD (think they) know better than NASA :)

Can't recall who it was, but someone even knocked up a great youtube video showing exactly this but hiding the non-integer numbers etc... and it feels/looks much better for it! As you'd expect.

Totally support FDs decision. If the announcement of starts at 4.00 then it is going to finish at 3.00, which will be totally wrong. So the fix is possible if you can say any word in a matter of millisecond at least, which is impossible.

If FD would supported your idea "one" would be announced at 1.00 and finished at 0.00, which means there would be no time to announce "engaging" at all because at 0.00 you already should be in SC/HJ at this moment.
