Learned something new today

So back on Friday, I decided to see what would happen if you traveled from one star system to another without jumping - just using supercruise. I also decided that if I'm going to do this, I might as well make it a good one. Turns out that I couldn't... I traveled over the weekend and until just a little bit ago from Wredguia PC-G B39-2 to Polaris. I decided to see if traveling in such a manner would allow one to circumvent the permit issue. I managed to get within a few hundred kilometers of the point, but there wasn't anything there. I managed to have just enough fuel left to make it to Wredguia PC-G B39-1 to refuel and then go about my way. I'm rather disappointed, though, that I couldn't actually go from system to system in this manner. I think it would have been pretty interesting to have folks make end-runs around permits and then have something special happen, like get attacked by aliens or maybe earn a special bounty from the Pilot's Federation for ignoring the permit requirement.

The issue is loading the map. The FSD witch space jump is FD's way to recognize an attempt to transition from one area to the next so it can load the appropriate map. No FSD shift, map doesn't load. area doesn't exist.

Still disappointing, though. And I seem to recall seeing forum posts back in the beta\gamma days of someone traveling from Alpha Centauri to Sol in this manner, but I may be mistaken.

As far as I know this has always been this way. Has been tried a few times (seen threads in the main forum). For me personally not an issue. How many time do you want to SC to an other system? To avoid permits is the only time this would come in effect. And if you don't have the right permits, the authorities may blast you to bits anyway if you get into the system using non-FSD travel.

No, never happened. In late Alpha one pilot tried supercruising between systems, but after traveling the appropriate distance he found nothing. The game has been like this from the very beginning. The hyperspace transition screen occupies the time taken for procedural generation of the destination system and establishment of the instancing "island".

Interesting. :)
I agree this is disappointing, even if i fully understand such limitation.

By the way, you might probably know the answer to something i'm wondering :
* Do we have a speed limit in SuperCruise ?
( I once ran more 900C, but never had the chance to go faster, even during 400Kls trip)

I recall a post that someone found a system that had a secondary star system that was past the distance to the next Jump system (1.03Ly or something small like that). He flew to the second star and passed the theoretical location of the next system an nothing was there to represent the next system.

It showed a screen cap of both targets being lined up from his jump in point.

However, a loading screen or "freeze" while loading the new system would be ok with me, let´s say after half way or when coming closer than 1 ly or so.

But what could happen when entering a system with no permit ... especially when it´s not in human space ...

I'm probably mis-remembering something I read a couple of months ago.

Your "(went to the pub)" gets a big thumbs up from me ;)

At 2001c FSD doesn't fail
FSD used to fail when we literally had a "limit" bubble in Beta, to keep us herded together so we didn't wander off :D

someone also tried this in beta with the same result... not being able to actually supercruise from one system to the other...
