Proposal Discussion $150 Prem Beta or $150 upgrade SC Aurora to Consellation

For Spend it on Ed:

1) I have loved Elite since I first played it in 1984 on my old BBC micro (still got it some where on a 5 1/4 floppy).

2) I could put off upgrading my SC Aurora into a coni for now because the dog fighting mod is delayed (probably because the SC devs saw how good the ED alpha dog fight is)

3) SC is only out in 2015 I still have plenty time to come up with another $150 to upgrade my ship to a coni or another $250-300 if I pick up a coni and hornet to give me a mix of mid to end game exploration, cargo, and fighter ships to play with.

4) perhaps I should just keep the old Aurora and earn the credits to buy the coni by playing SC. I half fears it would be redundant to play though SC while already owning an endgame ship. Certainly the first 60 hours of game play would probably be like a player staring wow in level 90 epic gear, and that would not be fun long term.

For spending the $150 on SC

1) When the SC alpha dogfight module comes out at the end of Jan 2014 it should eventually allow players to test their new uber ships like the constellation in the assuming they own one.

2) When SC modular betas. One out in mid 2014 it would be nice to own a coni and a hornet so I can test different game play mechanics.

I have pledged for both but its a case of what you want the most I guess..

The Elite Dangerous Beta is likely to be almost the full game considering the games due for release in March....so its going to be a great experience...

On the other hand...Like I said....The full game is due out in March...so there could be only 5 weeks or so from the beta until you will get the full game anyway..If.....All goes to plan.

Assuming Elite Dangerous will be released on schedule ( around 10 weeks )then your SC Ship may be the way to go if there is a chance you get to play SC as well in January.

From what I understand about SC's alpha rollout of the dogfighting module we will initially only be able to fly a Hornet, just as the current ED combat module has only a standard Sidewinder. CR confirmed this in the last "10 for the Chairman" Q&A session in Wingman's Hanger ep. 49.

He did promise that later on we would be able to fly the ships in our hangers as part of the dogfighting module, but there was no promise of a date for this and we might be talking about a couple of months from now before you could fly your Constellation.

That said.....For me ...If I had the money and I really wanted to play ED then it would be the ED Beta for me ..and save up again :)

Yes, ED is moving so quickly and is so polished (I've had absolutely zero "bugs" as such with the alpha and only a couple of criticisms of details) that premium beta is probably going to be very close to final release version. Assuming there will only be about a month for each stage I guess it just comes down to whether one wanted to have access in Jan/Feb for $160, Feb/Mar for $140, or Mar/Apr for $115 (assuming you also bought the expansion pack - and who wouldn't?).

Also lulz at Star Citizen having a beta in mid 2014. Not going to happen....

Dont forget Star Citizen isnt a single game, and whilst the PU part of the game is not out till 2015, I believe Squadron 42 is still aimed at Q3 2014.

whilst this does not help the OPs dilemma, it does mean that a beta of some form in 2014 seems quite believable imo.

Easy there tiger, FD have got a lot to prove before you can hold them to that schedule. Remember, we were seeing Elite Dog Fighting gameplay in developer updates waaaaay back when. We just don't know how far along they are with anything else. They haven't given timelines for the betas, and things can and will go wrong.

FD have done a good job managing expectations so far, but the last thing we want is for the alpha to be the opening act that is hard to follow.

No pressure on the timescales, it will be done when it's ready.

Those release schedules are very loose as we know. However, officially SC and Squadron 42 are released in one package 2015 Spring. Squadron 42 beta could be released 2014. Also SC has dog fight module, planet side module, and then complete alpha in 2014 planned.

Yes I have to agree as confident as I am and sound even ED could slip....
But so far we have not been informed of any in the process :)

In case anyone missed it SC is looking like at least a 2 month delay for dogfighting alpha (CR announcement today)

OK I have decided to splurge my Earthly credits on the premium beta and am now a proud backer of ED

I'll keep my Aurora MR for now until I get to test the SC dog fighting module. Did SC say how long they would keep ship sales / upgrades open? I could always just stick with the Aurora LN upgrade for about $10 for a combat version.

Welcome! That money will also give you free expansions for life :)

I don't understand why spend money to purchase a ship that you can earn in game. I think part of the fun in a game is to progress and so be able to earn new stuff like ships.
In elite I have the alpha pack, but I will start my game with a sidewinder, because I want to feel the taste of getting new ships during gameplay.

Well done sir! Welcome to the club.

I think you made the right choice. I'm an old SC backer, and have only just come on board with ED and in Alpha - very impressed. You'll get to play more earlier coming to ED, and remember you'll be able to get new ships fairly quickly when the final SC comes out, starting on the Aurora will be fun!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I'm looking forward to the premium beta.

I upgraded the Aurora basic to the LN version and I will probably stay with that as I think it would be odd to start the game with an endgame ship, even though I am impatient to spin a coni in my hangar...I just have to learn to be patient and enjoy the game rather than spoil it for myself. I think RC mentioned that the average player should be able to afford a coni after 60 hours of game play and the LN Aurora should be enough for when the dog fight module comes out.

Between my account and my wife's we have every ship in SC including an Idris... except for the Avenger and the Scythe.

TBH, I would get into the Beta. I actually regret buying all those ships except for a few. The Connie won't be ready to fly until probably next fall anyway.

You can be playing ED now...

Edit: Welcome aboard Commander!
