Personal experience on round trip to Sagittarius A* with photos

Hi fellow commanders,

I would like to share with you my experience as an explorer noob about my trip to Sagittarius A*,

It was the first time I was going out to do some seriously exploring so far away from human inhabited space, and to be honest I did not really know what to expect. First of all, when I posted a message on the exploration forum, I was surprised to be added as a friend by about 20 other commanders, each of which heading to a different region of the galaxy. I have had some very nice discussions while out there, and the exploration community is a great one! :)

When I started my trip, I was a bit scared that I would get bored quickly, but this never really happened in fact. What I did not expect was this feeling of profound loneliness and of humility, while being fully immerged in this mind blowing quantity of stars. The trip to the center is long, very long, and I believe this should never change, as it gives its sense to the scale of distances. In some way, jumping from a system to an other 34Ly away feels like cheating, as light itself would spend 34Y to reach the destination. But even by doing so, you spend hours and hours to reach the center of the galaxy.

I have truely seen wonders on the way, weird configurations of stars, gaz giants with amazing colours. I remember in particular an earth like planet with metalic rings, amazing view with with the very numerous bright stars in the background, if someday we can land on planets and install small outputs, it's definitely where I will head to!
There was also the gas giant that I would qualify as the most beautiful one I have ever seen, with armonious, green, wine and cream colours. I saw also a few stars with rings, and a netron star in the midle of a blue / violet gas cloud (see all the photos below).

Homesickness, that is crazy, I really did not expect that! How the hell did you manage to give me this feeling in a video game FD? that's crazy, you guys are geniuses :) Elite is not a game, it's a feeling generating program, it's awesome! I felt it strongly, especially on the way back. I was missing the low density of stars, I was missing the yellow, orange and red stars, I was missing seeing other ships flying around.

I was very much looking forward to land in my home station after such a long trip, and I was stressed that a simple mistake could destroy all the data I had collected so far, it that trip that lasted three weeks I think.

I'm looking forward to your comments, I'm glad to be part of this community :)

Commander TNX

Nice trip, nice pics.
You do realise that if you have any Paint or Ship Integrity left, you are not really trying ? ;)

Exploration is a strange thing to take on, especially when we decide to head out on a long distance run.
But for some of us, it has become a compelling career. Well done to you on getting to Sag A* & another well done on making it back home again.

I wonder how long it'll be before you feel the need to go back out again... let us know, wont you?

Oh, and you're right, it is a great community, and the community is glad to have you too.

Nice pics. I am on my way back from Saggy, althoguh it is a tortuous route of south west from saggy and then along the arm back home, should be about 75Kylies. Like you I have to stop and take the odd piccie. There is no point in rushing it. I agree it can be lonely, but that suits me.

I can assure you after 100 days in the void being burnt by stars I do indeed stink like a totally stinky thing, but I dont care.

Agreed, if there is a taboo topic in exploration it's probably this one! god I need an air freshener for my ASP!

Thanks! oh yes I will go back again!
I will definitely go back there, and I'm very much looking forward for the future new exploration features of the game, when you see these planets from up there you definitely want to go down and explore ... and maybe installing a small camp in a beautiful place, far away from everything and from everyone else.

Thanks for sharing and a stunning set of images. Having done a tiny taster trip out to Mintaka-B and the Horsehead nebula I know exactly what you mean, there's a profound sense of being a long way from home or any other human contact.

On May 28th I'll be making my own trip out to Sag A. I've entered myself into the Buckyball Run A* race and am hoping to get there in around 15hrs. I guess my journey out will be a very different experience to yours as it's going to be a feat of endurance against the clock. I'm genuinely scared as this is clearly a fairly major undertaking (don't tell Bucky I said that tho).

However, once I've recovered I plan to take a leisurely route back, and hearing your story has really helped me to see past the race and look forward to my time exploring the wonders this galaxy has to offer.

Again, thank you.
