Problem with the Detailed Surace Scanner - Help Please!

Hi, I don't know if I'm being a bit stupid or if I have a definite problem, but I need some advice.
Fitted out my Asp earlier for some serious exploration. Included an advanced discovery scanner (ADS,which works fine) and, for the first time for me, a detailed surface scanner (DSS) - which seems to be inoperable . Points which might aid you in advising me:
1. Have tried the DSS in 5 different slots, it makes no difference
2. The DSS is active in the modules panel
3. I am well under my power limit
4. The DSS does not appear on the HUD
5. The DSS does not appear in the fire group options (but the ADS does appear)
6. Even flying VERY close to an unexplored star or planet does not automatically trigger the DSS (and I mean close enough to make an emergency stop at times)
If this is a known glitch, then I have missed it in the forums. Any advice short of restarting the whole game would be appreciated.
Many thanks

The DSS does not get assigned to a firegroup. Just target the planet and when you are close enough then the scan initiates automatically.

you have to select a target then be close enough to scan it. Then wait, and wait.. It is not a module you can select or assign to a fire group.

You have to lock onto the planetary body you are scanning and it starts automatically. Distance depends on the size of the body being scanned.

The distance away from your targeted object before the surface scanner starts is dependent on how the large that object is. The larger it is, the further away the scanner can be and still scan the object. I have been 18,000 ls from a star and had it start scanning. That is about the largest one I have had in my explorations so far.

Good luck and Happy Hunting!

Thanks for all your help Commanders, DSS now working fine.

Note that when you sell the scan data, in your statistics it is supposed to show up as level 3 scans, but there is a bug where it shows up as level 2 instead - just a display bug as you get paid the correct amount for the scans
