The Freelancer Thread

Sorting out the Thargoid NPC names, and getting their comms sorted is something in progress. The comms for the whole game actually need to be re-done to include the system names, faction names and base names (no small task)

Anyway, in addition, here's my latest gameplay video which includes a bit of Thargoid bashing.

Return of the Thargoids

Next release of the mod will include some HD texture improvements. HD Textures by radiant, and star backgrounds by Hunon - full credits and links will be included in the mod readme and credits files.

Here are some previews from my development version

Just so anyone interested knows, I'll attempt to run an open multiplayer server for anyone to join over the next few days. I'm sure if we can get actual decent multiplayer feedback it'll prove invaluable to Stormprooter in future as quite often bugs (and I don't mean the Thargoids) often only arise in unintended situations.

I have no idea if it will be visible online over my mobile broadband connection, but I hope it will be.

Current times I plan to run the server will be tomorrow & Thursday, then from 8pm to 5.30am GMT Friday till Tuesday

Great work there Stormprooter! Don't forget that post on the SC forums as I am sure many Freelancer fans would be interested in hearing about the update over there. ;)

I don't know Stormprooter, the thread has nearly 250 views, so some folk seem interested in it even if they are not posting about it. No bad for a thread that has not seen any new posts for a while. The thing about the SC forums though is that threads can very quickly become buried there so providing updates can give it a useful little bump. ;)

You are right of course. But I still think the SC forum has a much larger percentage of troll-like activity, probably due to the much higher number of users. Anyway, posted the update - we'll see what happens.

The new version I put up on moddb last Thursday, an hour before the E : D alpha release, has had 246 downloads, and no complaints so far :) ...

I think that'll be due to the larger userbase on Moddb (not to mention all the passing "trade" from browsers who've been directed there via stuff like google), whereas the folk at SSC are a small (but friendly) group who know what they like.

I've been exceptionally busy with work - I almost had to work a 7-day week there and I'm barely home long enough to eat & sleep before going off & doing it all again. Now I've got 1 day to myself I'll grab the latest update, but I don't really see myself feeling a need for the HD textures.

I know that download limits aren't as much a consideration as in the past, but it would be nice to have the mod as one download and the HD texture pack as a separate one for those that want it.

I think I need to clarify that SC refers to Star Citizen and not Space Sim Central (SSC) - the guys at SSC are great - and as you say, more discerning about what they like to play - but always friendly, encouraging and positive.

As for the HD textures - give them a go, you never know, you may like them :)

I'm sure I will, but being on mobile broadband a 300Mb+ download does eat a sizable chunk out of my web allowance. I've got it now and I'll give it a look tomorrow at some point (the first day I've had any time to myself for a while)

Ah yes, that is a definite issue. I will have to do 2 versions for future updates - one which will include graphics enhancements, and one without.

<nods> A very discerning bunch indeed.

I know you play Oolite almost exclusively - and it is a great game. I added quite a few of the eye-candy oxps to my installation recently, and it does make the game more attractive to play - I guess I just don't have your 'dedication' :D

I do have some mission-based oxps I am developing myself on the back-burner, I will probably get on to these at some point.

Next phase of development is now well underway.

Main addition is that of asteroid fields, mine fields and hazardous gas pockets in nebulae.

Weapons have been altered as well, beam weapons are now gone as they simply do not work well in the FL game engine. More re-organisation of weapon classes is required, to allow both missiles and energy bomb launchers on the same ship.

I may do an incremental release once this point is reached - it will mean saved games will no longer work (because of the weapons re-organisation)

Next step is then add pirate bases hidden away in the asteroid and mine fields.
Once that is completed, I can then add pirate patrols and tradelane attacks.

All in all, it should add quite a lot of extra 'dimension' into the mod.

On a side-note, I set up a little forum just for this mod. It is a little light on sign-ups at the moment, but it does seem to attract a bit of traffic on the way through.

Don't worry, I'm not wanting to divert topics from here (or SSC) - discussion is always welcome, wherever the location.

I just finished the original Freelancer campaign. I do have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this game. I loved the game worlds, the four nations (five if you include the missing ship) feels like a living world and I'm exploring the rest of the sector.

I didn't like;-
  1. the flight model - It was like playing the Star Wars Arcade game on constant loop. You needed the 3rd person view to have a chance of dealing with the opposing ships. I thought it was too difficult to play using the cockpit option.
  2. the bar - After a while you had to skip the character dialogue just to get to the rumor or mission.
  3. the missions - They do get a little repetitive. no escorting, no attacking transports or capital ships, base defense, base attacking or courier missions.

But even with these shortcomings I was disappointed that I won't meet King, Tobius or Juni again (was it just me or did the artists spend a lot of time getting Juni to walk that way).

Is there any Fan Made extensions that reuse these characters?

I think the Crossfire mod added another 10 or so single player campaign 'missions'. It's a lot more difficult than the standard game though, and I think you have to start from the very beginning all over again.

Sadly most mods never refer to those characters again, but the Discovery mod did re-use Tobias as the equipment dealer on Planet Leeds right up until the end of version 4.86. A couple of other characters do get re-used elsewhere though. For example, Dr Sinclair pops up on an order base as an NPC in the bar, and the smuggler who had the artifact reappears on a base hidden away called "The Shrine" with the name "Incognito"
