Look I'm going to be honest with you here. Do you really think flying a dropship is going to be better that flying a clipper? Really? Sure about that? If I were you I'd give the whole Federation thing up as a bad lot and come an join a proper Navy with proper ships, you know it makes sense

Personally I wouldn't bother at all with the fed's, I like my Baron title a lot more, but there's the Corvette coming up 'soontm', and It will probably require an even higher rank than 'Ensign'... I say probably, but it's all speculation really, 'could well be it won't require any rank at all, who knows? On the other hand, 'Federal Corvette' makes it clearly some military ship, so... Better be prepared than sorry ^.^
I got the Sol Invitation - it says someone will contact me there, but I haven't seen anything at any stations throughout the system. What do I need to do?
Also, is a Vulture's 2T cargo space adequate for the rank missions?

The Sol invitation is just a Sol permit really, no one will contact you once you're there, sorry :\
And 2t cargo is a bit light for BB missions, it's usually around 4 to 8 tons that are required, sometimes more...
It means nothing. It's just your permit.
2t isn't enough for all missions. You can give the vulture more though.

I don't think rank progression missions go above 8. The highest from my memory is 4. Maybe 5 or 6.

Usually they don't go above 8t indeed. But it depends on the commodity, I had what they call some light hauling missions where they gave me 30t of cargo to transport, jus' saying... Of course, they're not all that common, and you can ignore those missions too.
