Out there exploring: no galnet for me?

Well, I'm not actually sure if it'll work outside of the core worlds, considering how factions seem to prefer sending messages by ship (as opposed to sending it through the same witchcraft as Galnet)

-though I suppose they could just explain it away by yelling 'GAME-MECHANIC'. Which, in this case, isn't what I would call bad.

Not without access to a Docking Station, sadly.

On the Off Chance you're a Steam User you could employ a little Space Magicks to make the Steam Browser open up Galnet by default, but yeah...

A GalNet Reader Module would be nice. Shift + E on the KB / Look at Top Right Module, Populate the Top Right Corner Info Panel with scrolling Galnet Feeds with alert Overrides? Would be nice.

EDIT: Yay; Was unaware 1.3 gives us Galnet!

Just a question. We all have these fantastic ships with FSD's that can allow for travel without any relativistic consequence. How then is the news feed getting across the void? Does the feed exist in a dimension outside of space time, and all the stations just tap into that dimensional rift? Data itself has no "engine" so how are we getting messages when theoretically those feeds are still limited to a paltry 1.0C speed.

Even more odd is that we can get the daily news, but cannot send back our exploration data.

Subspace communication, based on Quantum mechanics.

Clearly the Pilot's Federation (backers of GalNet) has developed a tech which allows them to transmit signals through witchspace, and while they are willing to hand out receivers to their members, they are guarding the transmitter tech very jealously.

Alternately, the transmitter requires too much power or is too big to practically mount on a ship.

Startrek got away with subspace communication [handwavium]

It still had a maximum speed, though, it wasn't an ansible (mostly because that meant captains in the show had to make decisions without radioing for orders all the time).

I still find it a little odd that Galnet apparently updates throughout the galaxy pretty quickly, but factions are prepared to pay people to courier messages. I suppose sending a ship is somehow more secure, though there's always the risk your message might not get there...

Yeah people sometimes say we can't have out-system market information or transfer of exploration data because there's no FTL communication and they argue gameplay shouldn't trump lore. But in fact it's the other way around. There's clearly FTL comms in the Elite universe and we're stopped from using them for gameplay reasons.

I totally agree, to be honest; People are going to have means of communicating either diagetically in the game, or externally through IRC, forums, whatever. The in-game lore might work on the principle that there's no FTL radio happening or not, but information and conversation is going to find a way ;)
