Hi I have a TM Warthog HOTAS, i know they dont do any flight pedals, assuming i were to get a set of some description, do they help in combat or only really when adjust angle and position for docking or outpost landing?

I think you're a bit confused : the use of vertical and lateral thrusters is very useful in combat (more or less so depending on your ship), but the use of physical pedals is entirely optional. You can map lateral and vertical thrusters on your HOTAS, so pedals aren't a necessity, however for immersion and fun, they are nice to have. Personnaly I use them, the main axis is assigned to lateral thrusters, and the right and left toe brakes are assigned up and down thrusters respectively.
Personally I couldn't fly without them. Left/Right toe brakes assigned to lateral thrust, and rudder axis handles yaw. I feel more attached to ship when I use my whole body to fly. Besides, yaw is not very responsive in these ships, I prefer using leg muscles as opposed to twisting a controller
Maybe i am i have both my thrusters and yaw mapped to my hotas, tthe thrusters are mapped to a hat and the yaw mapped to a lever. Using the lever feels un natural whilst the hat is fine.

Thats the setup i would use if i were to purchase, what make of pedals do you guys use. Have heard bad things about Saitek.
I have bunch that I've collected over the years. Never had any problems with saitek, I have two Saitek Pro pedals, both work fine, and they have seen a lot of use. If you have the money to burn these are a good option https://flypfc.com/?/products/rudder-pedals/
This is what I am looking at next, a lot cheaper http://mfg.simundza.com/mfgcrosswind.php
Edit - If you do get pedals, take a look at the YAR/ROLL option in the menu, it allows you to quickly swap yaw from the pedals to your stick whilst in flight. I find it handy with the bigger ships like the T9/Conda
I switched from a Saitek Aviator with twist handle yaw control to the worthog HOTAS and have given up fixed weapon mounts until I get peddles. Yaw is incredibly important for fine aiming and advanced flight maneuvers. I have bound yaw to the main Hat but do not like its lost accuracy. Others have recommended turning and tuning yaw-to-roll options, this will do yaw for low flightstick side movement and if you continue through you'll switch into a roll. IMHO yaw + roll are not mutually exclusive for good combat.
Zeph's setup obviously works for him but in my setup this has nothing to do with lateral thrust. Yaw is a heading adjustment like turning in a circle. I do think I'll bind lateral thrust as toe breaks redundancy to the Throttle hat.
I use my CH Pedals for yaw - don't use the toe brakes for anything in Elite. The mini-stick on my CH Throttle is mapped to vertical and lateral thrusters. The throttle axis is the main thrust (full forward range) with a button to reverse. Along with my CH Fighterstick for pitch and roll, this all feels natural to me and adds to the feeling of intimate control of the ship.
