will elite be cross platform?

I understand e.d is coming out for the xbox. my son has one and I have elite on my laptop. will we be able to play together?

cheers

PC/MAC have one galaxy to play in together. XBox One/PS4 will have their own galaxy to play in together. So no, no cross-platform AFAIK between consoles and computers.

Not sure, for the consoles, but if this last weekend is any indication of how the server handle the increased load of the in-flux of players, (mac) then I hope NOT!

I understood that Xbox cmdrs would affect the sim, but they wouldn't actually be flying with PC/Macs.

(what Kczak said.)

these things never get ironed out in a week or so, do they?

This is correct. Xbox players will affect the same galaxy we all play in - take part in Community Goals, flood trading routes, Powerplay etc - but won't initially* be able to directly interact with PC/Mac players.

For simplicity's sake, ED's galaxy will matchmake up as follows, all CMDRs affecting the same Milky Way galaxy:
  • Open play - PC/Mac CMDRs
  • Group play - PC/Mac CMDRs
  • Open play - Xbox CMDRs
  • Group play - Xbox CMDRs
  • Solo
* FDev want Crossplay to include Xbox players too, but they're currently limited by MS's Xbox game-patch-testing policy - each update is checked by MS before deployment to gamers is allowed, which can take a week or two. For crossplay to work properly updates need to be deployed to all gamers (PC/Mac/Xbox/etc) simultaneously; if crossplay was enabled for Xbox/PC/Mac 'now' then PC/Mac updates would be delayed until the respective Xbox update is MS-authorised, hotfixes delayed massively, etc.

This is the reason Dust514 was only released on the Playstation since SONY allowed CCP to release there own patches without SONY interfering. M$ wanted to test patches etc... causing the problem. If FD had a chance they should of looked in to SONY aswel. But i guess Xbox route MAY and i seriously mean MAY just give them the chance to have Microsoft host and maintain a server for the galaxy to swap from P2P to server side...

To be fair if M$ hosted a single instance server for everyone at the cost of having to wait for M$ to test all patches i'd be fine with it since the entire galaxy could interact with each other just like EVE online.

There are couple positives for having consoles in separate instance too. They will encounter far less cheating due to everyone sitting on a closed platforms and most players are also using the same peripheral to play (controller). P2P networking is actually acceptable on a console for a game that has some competitive elements, although it is still far from ideal.

FDev will be hosting all servers, including for Xbox gamers, to ensure the galaxy is synced for everyone. And to allow them to crossplay later down the line once MS budge on their update-testing policy. FDev have already indicated that CMDRs can logoff their account from PC/Mac then logon to it on Xbox (e.g. from office to living room once kids are in bed).

P2P functionality will never be removed, it would require ED's whole networking being rewritten - but that's a discussion for a different forum thread - although for the record I'm personally very happy with the current implementation, and it will only get better and more stable for those unlucky CMDRs currently having troubles.

Edit: cannot find evidence of cross-platform (Xbox <> PC/Mac) ED accounts :/

DUST514 was an incredible undertaking, but tech/networking is advancing so quickly now, I have no doubt FD can pull this off.

As incredibly groundbreaking that EVE was/is, CCP tends to be one step behind the curve. (or perhaps three steps too far in front?)

I was thinking today how perfect Elite is. It's a working MMO, without ANY of the trappings of normal MMOs. By going back
to gaming fundamentals, I think Elite has broke new ground again.

People complain (perhaps justly) about a 'lack of content.' But that's just a side-effect of breaking new ground. Dribs and Drabs is the trick when
you have this kind of foundation.

With the tech/networking advancing so quickly now maybe if they cant get console and PC to play as one. Maybe they could introduce a way where console players would be sent to the PC version in the form of NPC's acting out what the console player dose. If they can minimise the lag between console player shooting, info being sent to server, changed to pc code, npc on PC shooting to next to zero then that could be a thought to think about.

I'm really hoping it's:-

PC - Mac

and then seperately

Xbox - PS4

Has there been a PS4 announcement I haven't heard?
Xbox is a timed exclusive, so it'll be coming to PS4 at some point.

Unless MS change their update-policy, then ED's galaxy matchmaking will likely be:
  • PC/Mac/PS4 (+Linux?) Open/Group
  • Xbox Open/Group
  • Solo
As that scenario approaches it will most probably push MS to bend the rules for ED, so as not to miss out on massive crossplay.

Do you have a link for the source? I don't see how that would work - surely the Xbox side will be on Xbox Live i.e. using a different account authentication etc. than the PC/Mac clients?

I'll dig it out. -- I FAILED (so I've amended my previous post, although the following is still logically sound)

Cross-authentication is already in play: Steam-purchased accounts are tied to new ED accounts, and soon ED store-purchased accounts will be able to generate their respective Steam keys. It'll simply should be that Xbox Live accounts will generate their respective ED accounts during game installation/first-login.

Whilst I look I've re-found this, which vaguely conflicts with some of what I've said about Xbox :/
http://metro.co.uk/2015/03/11/elite-dangerous-on-xbox-one-will-have-daily-updates-5097637/

Quote:
"GC: How will the frequent updates work on Xbox One? Will they be the same as on the PC and are Microsoft using Elite almost as a test case for MMOs on the console?

DB: So, there are several elements to this: we are doing daily updates of story and things like that, that will continue across all platforms including Xbox. The Xbox and PC, and Mac for that matter, all share the same galaxy, all share the same evolving story, all share the same community challenges.
In terms of wider updates to the game, obviously we’re working out how best to do that. But the beauty of that is that they don’t need to stay permanently in synch. Which is one of the things we’ve been looking at with cross play, because that is one of the factors that affects it. We haven’t decided whether we will do actual face-to-face cross play, other than participating in the same worlds and larger challenges.
So, more on that to come – other than we have solutions that we know will work."
