Selling your data

The thread about waiting for 1.3 reminded me of a question I had in mind:

When selling your data is there any kind of strategy available / advisable?

For example (and an answer to this as well would be appreciated): I have rank in the Federation (WO) but none at all in the Empire. I've got over a month's worth of data to hand in (will be near to 2,500 systems by the time I get back). Should I:

Drop into one safe Federation system, and sell the lot?
Likewise in the Empire?
Jump around like a tick on a hot tin roof selling bits all over to spread the love (and rep gains)?

It depends on what you are trying to do. I was thinking of
1) finding the first place I could outfit to get a ship that wasn't a complete sitting duck so I could move around a bit more safely.
2) using selling data to get permits for a few systems

I'm not an expert on faction ranking but I think if you want Empire ranking then spreading the sale across several different Empire factions may be better than selling it all in one place.

Spread your love, just keep checking when selling data, once you are allied, move on.

Is there a way to see your ranking with minor factions from selling data? Thanks to my bounty hunting I'm already allied with all the major factions, so all their minor factions seem to show as allied too.

You should see this your ranking with minor faction in the right pane.
It starts with your ranking/rep in the 3 majors faction, and if you go down you'll have the same info for minor faction.

It takes about 6m to turn a neutral faction to allied. I had 1 that took 10m, but that might have been a timing issue

When I got back, I was planning to finally build my rep with the Empire...but the Alliance had a community goal, so it was a no-brainer, dumped all my data in that station for a 10 Million cr bonus.

Snap. So much for loyalty lol. I am allied with most Empire systems so will have to trawl to find ones I am not aligned with. Unfortunatley there is no list of all the factions, so it is a case of serendipitous discovery.

To get the Rank for a Courier, you will probably have to do an assassination mission BEFORE you have sold most of your data. I don't think you can dump it all around the Empire, then have multiple Rank missions available, I think you have to do a ranking mission, then start increasing your Rep again. So unless you have a nice Vulture or Python sitting about, that is a risky proposition.

IMHO you should Rank up with the Empire as far as you can, then go get yourself a few Independent Permits.
