Aliens in Elite: Dangerous

I don't know why the community is having such a hard time figuring this out. They're all looking too hard, and missing the obvious. All you need to do (knock on wood), assuming this secret/message/easter egg is somehow encoded as the sound-bytes (a rather big assumption I might add), is just inject the bit sequences (or parts of them rather) into certain registers/memory addresses (break out the old memory address monitor utilities (monitoring the stack, etc)/hex editors (specifically for client-side save files)/packet sniffers (for server side communications; *not endorsing, approving, or recommending this in any way, shape, or form*)), and eventually you'll find (at least) two "things" that are linked to the sequences: one that generates them; another that somehow verifies them against some criteria.

I know some of these words..

Procedurally generating the carbon and ammonia based animal life on the worlds we discover would be awesome, but I dislike, to a great degree, how Sci Fi games use the "planet of hats" approach to alien civilizations. Not only do Alien civilizations come across as monolithic stereotypes, except for a few story line characters maybe, but they are always human stereo-types.
It is the staple of the 4X games; the noble warrior race, the plutocrates, the theocrats, the Hippies, The communists.

I agree. Examples shown in this thread all look very much alike humans or other Terran life, only with few randomly added extra limbs or antennas. If the theory of evolution taught us anything, it's that even the slightly varying conditions can create vastly different outcome. When you take a look at some life forms existing here on Earth, they appear more alien than most of the creatures usually depicted in Sci-fi stereotypes.

Yep, its difficult to get actors with 6 working limbs who look more like an octopus :) or to convey complex, diverse, social fabrics in 5 lines. Scripts and FX budgets from the 60s & 70s have a lot to answer for in terms of setting our expectations... but this is a game so needs to pander to our expectations :)

Personally I quite like Iain M Banks's view of what inter-galactic relations may look like. It feels like he had actually thought about it a bit more deeply than others.

Maybe make a race of hostile Aliens who only cruise around to shoot down Players. Make them be played by all the 'I am totally roleplaying a psychopathic killer Commander' players.

Fortunately, there are plenty of serious Sci-fi authors whose work can serve as great inspiration for guys who are, or will be, engaged to create alien species for ED. Personally, I have big respect for Fred Hoyle, Stephen Baxter, Stanislaw Lem, Robert L. Forward... of course, Isaac Asimov and Arthur Clarke have to be always mentioned in this regard as well.

That would be extremely cool to have some players be the thargoids

WEll maybe not THE thargoids so much as some thargoids. Especially some thargoids trying to undermine the ongoing peacefull negotiations after the first big clash ....

No Douglas Adams - I want shouty yellow Aliens ;-)

I wonder if anyone playing has seen an Earth-like planet outside of known space with city lights on the night-side... That would be a pretty good indication of aliens, yes?

It would. Some explorers make a point of looking for that very specific thing. I know any ELW and Ammonia world I get a nice close up, so would be likely to notice.

There is plenty of life out there. However, I think the simple answer is (and I'd be happy to be wrong), but at the moment there is no other intelligent life in the galaxy, other than the odd Unknown Artefact or Relic. These will get introduced in future releases.

I agree with you, Nuarda. I would love to have a alien cook in my crew. Imagine the extremely disgusting (but tasty! :S) alien dishes that s/he (it?) would cook...

This makes me think of Neelix in Star Trek Voyager lol

I concur though this is a great idea and would like for the galaxy to be populated by several intelligent alien lifeforms as intelligent life can't possibly be so rare as to only have 2 species populating an entire galaxy.

It would be good to also have evidence of different past alien civilizations, maybe a planet or two with entire cities in ruins. On the Thargoids, to me they sound malevolent, violent and advanced similar to the Borg and the Shadows. What would be interesting to see is the Thargoids attacking any of the other alien races in the galaxy, in essence they are the galactic bullies and they love it.
