No more sense of accomplishment

Ok. So I've been playing this game for a few months now & have loved it completely, but today I decided I'm pretty much done with the game unless FD fix a couple major issues. First, what upset me the most is that I got a mission to destroy some big guy. I go out looking for him only to run into about a dozen USS to find nothing but harmless traders. Not even people who are wanted so I can at least have a little fun in my search. After over an hour of this, I turned off the game with the decision that it's time to get back to other games where spending an hour, I can look at what I've done and see progression & feel accomplished.

The second thing is that I got invited to Ross 128, where I have done a bunch of local deliveries and jobs, but after a few days of this, there hasn't been a single progression offer. I spend an hour wandering around & achieving nothing & I do a bunch of stupid little side quests that yield very little & in some cases, I have to spend money, for nothing. There is no more advancement, there is no sense of achievement. Once you have the best ship, there's nothing else to play for.

I hate feeling this way because I really enjoy this game, but this weeks complete waste of time for nothing has turned me off of this game. I'm sure I'll still piddle with it when I get bored of other games, but for casual gaming, this game, for me, has run its course. I'm only here to vent as I don't expect anyone to care and actually expect some snobby responses, but I can't be the only person who feels this way about this game and I hope someone from FD will actually make some changes to these issues. If so, I could see coming back, but until then there are just too many other options that provide a sense of satisfaction for hours and hours and hours worth of time and effort.

The target in assassination missions won't necessarily be wanted (it isn't a bounty hunter mission).

Are you definitely searching in the correct systems for your mission targets?

But maybe the updates in 1.3 will solve these issues for you as (among other things the mission system is getting an overhaul)?

You do know about Powerplay, right? (Beta next Tuesday)

Based on what you have written it will probably address most of your issues.

Yeah career progression could do with a tweak or maybe a little clarity on what's needed.

I seem to have reached a 'glass ceiling' at Lieutenant with the Feds. I can't seem to do anything t trigger the next stage. I've tried all the suggestions but nothing's happening. It would help if I knew what was needed or at least knew I was doing the right thing but it takes time and I need to keep going.

For this reason I've not bothered trying to pursue an Imperial career, which is shame as I quite fancy the clipper and have a large bag of cash to splash!

Yes, OP, I see your point.
ED is not (yet) a game of accomplishment but a virtual exhibition of ships and stars.
It's not the game of "doing" something but "to be" in a certain mindset helped by a visual background.

In 1.3 we trust.
Then in 1.4 I guess :)

What rank are you up to?

I managed to trigger the next rank mission last night from picking rep missions for a single faction each time they show at one of the stations I visit regularly.

Definitely in the right system. I read somewhere someone else had a similar issue. There may be a glitch when you are bounty hunting and someone in a USS gives an update to the quest and you look at the update, it basically cancels out the original bounty. I did read the update and after dropping in a dozen USS' I only found Harmless Lakons, not even wanted NPC's. That's when I gave up. I was still upset that no progression missions came up either after a week of playing.

I completely agree with you, which is why I have loved this games so much. I really enjoy the overall experience, but when I actually try to achieve something (Federal Ranking), I'm not given an option. I expect I'll come back after the next update and see if the bugs have been worked out.
