Python implosion?

I came floating in at like ~180 in a python and clipped the inner corner of the mailslot (Entering from the outside) and imploded in spite of having a pristine A4 + 4 A booster shield as well as 100% hull...

Anyone know what happened? :(

Looks like you were too fast. How many pips did you have in systems? When you down-grade your shield generator - you have to be extra careful flying inside the station. These parameters of the A4 shield generator Opt: 285 T; Max: 713 T are below the mass of the Python, hence shields can be taken out very easily.

0 pips in SYS?

The difference between 0 and 2 pips in to systems is negligible.

As above, A4 insufficient for those speeds.

Mods, is there any way we can sticky a "I died" thread with key information on known death bugs (loading in asteroid, anaconda top impact) so we no longer have to entertain the 10+ threads a day of "was this a bug"?

Do you mean "in this case", or just in general? I'd be interested to see if this was true if you have a reasonably sized Generator for your ship mass, as I often put a couple of points in shields in combat for stray hits, increasing it to 4 for when they get the edge on me or if I'm jousting. Anecdotal evidence would lead me to believe that 2 vs 0 is still worthwhile, though not as big of a difference as 2 vs 4.

You realize 180 m/s is Mach .5, right? I wouldn't call that 'floating'.

180 is too fast for those shields. I'll full speed a Python through the mail slot but only if it's packing class 6 shields and at least 2 pips to sys.

The fact that you clipped the inner corner makes it sound like the same issue I've seen a few times, and reported a bug about.

Fly directly into the wall at the same speed and see what happens. If you blow up, that speed is too high and your original accident was inevitable. If you don't blow up, as I suspect you won't, it's the same bug.

I've hit walls straight on at like 140 for sure, possibly higher and had like maybe half a ring worth of damage on 4 pips, so over an entire ring without pips. I do understand the shield is downgraded, which is why I boosted it up with 4 A4 boosters.

I sorta follow this following link for my shield decisions, and never had issues with a piracy asp w/ 3A shields(Double downgrade!), or a vulture with 4A shields ramming into things or doing combat, never with shield boosters on either.

The math based on this says that I have 789.12, which makes a 6a shield about 76% as effective as my current setup. (Though, this entire chart could be wrong, or inaccurate.)

Also, defining my hit. It was like a skim hit. I made it past like almost half of the landing pads inside the station before exploding. It didn't stop, or even really slow me down at all.

Picture to help define.

So would you recommend a A5 Shield for the Python and Anaconda?

Depends on what you need it for. For combat the biggest shield the ship will carry is always a must, for trading you'll generally want the one that just barely handles your hull mass. I have a class 3 or 4 shield on my trading python, I just take it relatively slow through the letterbox if I have to approach at a bad angle. It covers minor bumps and dents and that's all it's needed for. If you plan on regularly taking your trading ship full of precious metals through the letterbox at full tilt then no shield will save you if you smash headfirst into the wall.

If you just clipped it, I don't know, it might have registered a very brief but sufficient acceleration change to trigger the "ship hit wall, blow up ship" game mechanic.

Yeah you entered the docking slot at 180 and hit the station.

Try coming in at around 100 next time.

clearly 0 pips in sys, and btw 2 pips and 0 pips are basically identical, even 3 is only a very small improvement, but 4 is huge.

File a ticket. I once crashed my Anaconda into a station with full power in SYS and I was blown up. Turned out it was a bug. Later I took out an A-rated Viper and boosted it straight at a station (1.2 x speed of sound) and barely scratched my hull. Hull mass and sheilds are different but you get the idea.

isnt there a flaw in the pythons shields just above the pilot?
