Legal Name Change

Well there is a certain commander that is infamous for ramming players in stations. If he could change his name at will it would be easier to catch commanders unaware. And he could hide from players wanting revenge.

For other players, a new commander name must be accompanied by a list of old names of this commander. Some players have personnal accounts to settle with other commanders ...

Thanks for the answers.

A list with aliases the CMDR has used in the past is a nice idea. I think that would add to the game play.

The problem of a change of name of a commander could be partially solved by the registrations of the spaceship (s). Unless he sells his spaceships

Thinking of this again, I think it needs licence plates, as a unique identifier

What you're thinking of are callsigns, as license plates can easily be changed. :p The question is what do you think having a unique identifier would give you? The ability to permanently track an individual player? What makes you think it is realistic to be able to do that? The universe is a big place; it makes sense for players to be able to hide in it.

Most MMOs don't offer a name service because of this. Players and their pilots are 'identities' and part of their legend. It's open to abuse in the way mentioned above. CMDR Jack McBlaggard is a renowned pirate. After a few months whenever people see CMDR Jack McBlaggard they run for it. Or log out. Pirate Jack McBlaggard's legend is now a hindrance. So he changes his name.

Bounty hunter CMDR Brian Furious is a renowned bounty hunter. After a few months whenever pirates see Brian McFurious they run for it. Or log out. Bounty hunter Brian McFurious's legend is now a hindrance. So he changes his name.

You're right, it isn't really abuse as such, but it IS avoiding consequences. And right now it's one of the few consequences we really have.

It seems to me that maybe this is being a little overthought. :) It's just a game, after all. If I were able to change my in-game name and anyone really cared enough to be bothered by it, that'd be a good sign that maybe it's time to spend a bit of time out of the house, get a bit of exercise and whatnot.

It's a good idea, a fee and a limiter how often you can change your name within say half a year (once e.g.) should be good enough.

I think we should be able to change cmdr names BUT that our CMDR tag could change based on our actions. Killing a lot of clean pilots federation members it comes kllr, involved in too many out of combat collisions.. RMMR or flaky internet always in combat LGGR

This tag should be a challenge to clear and be account tied regardless of wipes or name change Imo.

I wouldn't mind this as a paid option. I have a couple of reserved names bought using the 'Reserve Name Only' option in the legacy Backers' App. I've considered upgrading one of them to a full account so I could play as the alternative name but it would mean starting from scratch and having a lot of explored systems under the old commander name. I'd happily pay full price for the ability to switch my primary account to one of these names, as long as there was an option to bring across all the exploration tags and reputation flags along with the credits.

I understand the fear of abuse, though, and it may mean this idea is a non-starter. Outside of the official forums there are already people discussing the tricks they get up to using "alts", in some cases several per player, each of which has cost them £40. Some people would be amazed at the money others will fork over just to cause a bit of mischief.

I've got no objections to it if it was sold in the store for a reasonably high enough amount.

However, I think it should only be available under the following conditions: -

  1. Only ever one name change per account.
  2. You have a clean sheet with Frontier. By this I'm referring to no reports against you made direct to Frontier. If you haven't got a clean sheet, no name change period.
  3. Frontier check, where ever possible that you've never cheated or taken advantage of any flaws that have benefited your progress within the game.
  4. Any Bounty on your head must be cleared and a cooling off period once paid before the change can be made.
  5. Must be docked for the change to be applied.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head at the moment.

What brought this idea on, is that as I played more and more I got into the whole RP aspect, and now as I formed my ig character I would like to make it Commander William Obtuse instead of just Obtuse.

Theres room for only one Bill in this galaxy... and I'm it

Bill

:p

It's open to abuse though.

Yet somehow almost every proper MMO has been able to survive offering this facility, with a cooldown, usually for for a fee.

..or picking on noobwinders in starter areas, ONAN?

I did not read every post but had the thought that if name change is allowed old names are not recyclable and you should have some indicator that informs there are aliases for the cmdr and those aliases should be viewable in the contact info somewhere..

Only if they add an ingame "kill on sight" list, thst gets updated if a player changes his name.

You think that will achieve anything? Three of my old commander names are on one KOS list and I'm flying around with the fourth (I'm not a trouble maker, I just cause problems for the trouble makers). Restarting is no biggie when you've been playing long enough.

The funny thing with KOS lists is that if I restart and choose a new name then my old name becomes available. If a new player picks that name then there's an innocent player out there who, unbeknownst to them, is already on a KOS lis.

How is this being handled with the Xbox? Is it a gamertag thing? I'm not that familiar with consoles, but it looks as though those guys can change their names. In which case...

That's a very good point, although I'm sure Frontier have already got that covered. Well, at least you would hope so, or as you've said "In which case..."

Also not familiar with consoles, but I'm sure it'd be that once the account is created you've stuck with that name, unless of course you do the same as on the PC & Mac carry out a Clear Save.
