Favorite Exploration Ship ? Hauler For Me

Says the one who spends the majority of his time in-station waiting for more beer to be loaded so he can go back out? ;)

It's not my fault the station commodity-handlers are so slow!!!
They should be able to load a ton of beer in under a minute, darn it!!

Edit: a scientific research ship would be great - something rigged for planetary exploration. Huge jump range, not much weaponry, storage for lots of drones,
and bays for samples.

The only way that the money grind could ever become stable would be if they implemented ongoing costs (like life). Right now it's just fuel, ammo, insurance, and repairs. But it could also be normal wear and tear, taxes, station rent, crew/employee salaries, food, etc. That is unfortunate that a fleet is already verboden. I can see why they didn't want it, if simply for griefer prevention. I still think you should be able to have at least a wings worth of ships under your indirect command.

I hope the galactic-risk element has real strategy to it and isn't just the current small-cog-in-a-big-machine dynamic we already get from CGs.

The reason the fleet idea (or personal big stations) is verboden is because the focus is supposed to be you and your ship, not you and your empire. Even a wing of ships in a way is too much, not when you can get a wing of real people easily enough.

I'm sure there will be strategy to PowerPlay, but the Elite universe has always been a matter of a small cog in a big machine. This isn't a game where you're Bill The Galactic Hero and the fate of the galaxy rests on your shoulders ;) But I'm sure you can make a difference (and more of one if you're coordinating with other like minded friends - all the more reason to get friendly in the game. I got over 20 people on my friends list ;) )

Wr3nd, the 1st person stuff is an optional expansion. If you don't want it, you won't need it. I think you'll want it though ;) because it is very likely going to be awesome and not at all like BF4. Maybe more like space engineers.

Well, I do have Space Engineers as well to scratch that itch (and BF4 for that matter). But yeah, I will more than likely end up getting any and all expansions to ED. I just have my reservations on certain aspects of game-play that might be implemented in those. For my desires, further development of ED would be better placed elsewhere. I might also be in the minority on this.

I've been meaning to do this actually. I was just waiting until I wasn't a liability. I'm getting close ;) I'm occasionally pretty handy in a Vulture with FA off.

Well that's just being practical. Nothing is guaranteed, but the quality so far has been very solid. I can't see FD releasing a subpar product, but I guess it could happen. I agree that certain aspects of current gameplay need some tweaking, development, and more depth. And this should be a priority before any expansions are released, but whose to say it must be either-or and not both? Parallel development might have a greater chance to make the game as a whole feel more organic. I am hoping that some aspects of depth will be added in Power Play? I guess we'll find out in tues how big this patch really is.

Woah, this thread become something else halfway thru it! Awesome discussion! So, let me catch because by the time I wake up, all England has posted already something interesting in the forums and we Americans are late to the party!!

First off, I love the Asp!!! Love it, love it, love it!! To the point that I bought the game, not in a small part, due to its look! Like HagbardCeline and Ziljan, I also think of the Nostromo when I see it!! And it turned out to be perfect -at least for me- in game!!

One of the fun parts was to make it completely multirole, so I can put any of my many hats immediately and have the Orinoco respond to it! For me, my ship is like my home, so I don't switch ships or even modules that often, if I do at all! It was a grind in the beginning, but after I had the money for the Asp -took me a month- I never looked back, or forward! Been flying it ever since, exclusively, and still love it.

Only thing I don't LOVE: it looks sometimes like a turtle...that's funky design....I would like it to be bulkier, as in more towards T6 shape than this strange spattered turtle...BUT I still like it overall more than the other ships, including the Fatconda which I detest because looks like a rich powerful tycoon yacht more than a spaceship, and I hate rich powerful tycoon people mainly because I don't have any as a friend! lol..

Now, onto the matter of the shipyard design...sighs...here are my two cents:

Elite Dangerous is supposedly a sandbox. A sandbox allows to create your own stuff and to use it, and hence your own story as you go. Me, I think these are the games I have played the most that can fit that description: SimCity, Sims, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, and pushing it: Flight Simulator (?). Correct me if I got wrong models but, based on these, Elite Dangerous is doing a terrible job at being a sandbox.

The Sandbox has a creation that I own and I can shape according to my creativity making it unique against all other sandboxes around!

We own the ships, yes, but we can hardly modified them as we go in a way that they stand out from the rest. You shape modules, but good luck with having CMDR X spotting your ship and go, "Ohhh you have such a cool Cargo Scanner!" -Not happening. Actually, even worse, most likely CMDR X will never get to spot your ship cause, for one, we all park pretty far from each other, and for two, we fight at damn too high speeds as to notice that at the end of the day, your ship has the same orange and black paint or white and blue than mine. :::slow clap::: The ships are not unique and probably will never be. So I own them but cant customize them or get creative with them in a way that I can show and express my creation to others.

What's left then? The Galaxy? We are never gonna be able to own stations! Sadly cause I could spent hours engineering one with nice pads and board walks and decorating it and making little hot dog shops and..ok, ok..probably wont get that bad...what is sure is that I am not gonna own, nor i am going to design any station, post, or space shack...none....

And if helping Lady Kahina or Patreus or completing a CG is the way for me to create in the Sandbox, please, might just as well put levels and cut scenes already...

Don't get me wrong, everybody that knows me a little knows that I LOVE Elite...but lets be real here, this is not and never will be a Sandbox....of anything....

Some good points there as well, Kancro.

I wouldn't exactly label Elite: Dangerous as a sandbox game either. It isn't what came to mind first for me. It is a nice open and free-form game/simulator though, which I quite like. I host a few Minecraft servers and I definitely regard Minecraft as being a sandbox game, even literally, as you can play in and with the sand in it. I'm OK with ED not being so sandboxy. Maybe something like custom paint jobs, or even more selection and faction design difference of ships would be pretty cool.

...

Ziljan, I hear you, and I'm not saying that working on developing certain aspects of ED would necessarily mean that other aspects couldn't be worked on as well. There are just certain things that have been suggested that I'm not all that keen on, as they don't really seem to be compatible with the game-play style version of ED that we have now. I still reserve the right to keep an open mind about further expansions though. ;)

The numbers on ED Shipyard aren't off by more than a single LY in jump distance. The DB would have to be extraordinarily dense with a class 4 to anything below a 35 LY jump range. And by dense I mean weigh almost as much as cobra while being the size of an Eagle. If it had a class 3 FSD, the only way it could jump more 23 LY would be if it weighed less than a stripped down Eagle. And that beggars belief.

Personally I would say the Asp has got to be my current favorite for exploration and that is down to two things, jump range and fuel tank. The only thing that can outpace her is the Annie and I am nowhere near that kind of rich.

That said the DB is starting to look like its worth a punt but I will wait to see the real numbers rather than speculation about it performance.

Tuesday can't come fast enough.

Yep, I've been speculating too much about it already. It's time to see some hard numbers.

My last assumptions would look like this:
price 1-2 millions
40-60 ton hull
30 LYs max jump range
2x C2, 2x C1 weapon hardpoints

you might be right, that it is basically an Adder with better guns. But it seems strange that they would increase the now crowded number of cheap ships in the ~30 LY year range. It is also strange that they would make a ship the size of the adder with the burly looks of the vulture, and make it lighter than eagle?
