Yes yes, Thargoids, I know.

But it's a big galaxy and the game is packed with SF references.

Some part of you is therefore unreasonably hoping for a crossover.

But with whom?

Mahendo'sat? Skroderiders? The Affront? Krondaku? Kzin?

Which alien race would be awesomest, and why?

Ohhhh gosh, you might want to get Subnautica. There is an area in it where the ocean gets dark and suddenly there's no life around (though it's in beta so it might have not been added yet). There are ... pointy things poking out every which way! It looks for all the world like a Shadow ship crashed into the ocean and killed everything around it. It's creepy as all heck. The hair was up on the back of my neck as I went around that area.

Back on topic, I think it'd be interesting to be flying through a wreck looking for salvage and have movement in the debris. Like maybe a xenomorph crawling around and looking at you through your canopy. I'd be screaming at the monitor, "SOMEBODY SHOOT SOMETHING!!"
